Australian Rules football classics

  1. Funny the things one remembers. I was at the last home game of the Fitzroy Lions, Brunswick oval,1996........what a strange, depressing and surreal experience it was.

Shitty meat pies, could not get a beer to dumb the nerves, and wasn't even a big crowd.

Probably did not help, we had all shared a monster Doobie of terrific ganja, before we got there, but I had not been to a match of this proportion before.

Only went to the MCG once, thanks to my com-padres, nearly got in a fight in the stairwell.

My Housemate was a footy chick, (yes, they exist) would have screwed any member of the team she supported, had to drag her away from a "confrontation" with a behemoth opposition supporter,
    and his buddies, to.

Got slugged in the jaw for my trouble, but, I broke up the debacle, I learned.

Drunken football fans, of any code, or sex, should be treated with utmost caution.

You always knew when the NFL talent scouts were at a Ben Graham (Geelong) game. Every kick out was straight down the guts and as hard as he could. Thinking of life post AFL :D

Perfect illustration last week of why I now prefer Rugby Union over AFL. The Jack Trengove (Melbourne) incident. The bloke lays a textbook tackle and cops 3 weeks. What a joke!

  6. Well, it works that way.
Your not talking about Dermott Breretton , former Hawthorn thug and talented player stirring shit, nor Richard Osbourne getting KO'd in that quite sickening incident, many moons ago.
Perfect tackle, resulted in someones head hitting the ground very hard.

Happens. How exactly is union better? You mean, you might not have gotten a penalty for "stamping" someone unconscious, or ripping their nose off with inch and a half cleats? Seem to recall the South Africans were quite good at that......

Look, it's football. You can never win.
I used to play back pocket, or back flank, effective purgatory for the unskilled Aussie Rules player........
Football of any code is about stars, and stars kick goals, or score tries, or touchdowns, nobody ever remembers the poor sap who played defense and won a game with a tackle, or you know, as Lomu says, "talking, on the field."

  7. I used to be able to flatten a running man with a gridiron ball at 20 metres.......wasn't great, but wasn't total crap either.
Would never have made quarterback, put it that way.
Thankfully, it was in the park.

I never mastered the torpedo punt, even in AFL, Gridiron balls are really strangely shaped to.
As a defensive player, in afl juniors, this is the guy who was my inspiration.
    Oddly enough.
