To be fair, a six figure salary in early 1980s was like $300K today. Lots of room for savings and investment portfolios. How come he ended only with a house and $90K by 2008? Lived it up? Also what was this decision to give up top job to stay at home a nurse kids aged 14 and 16. They were not 4 and 6 so what problem having a housekeeper keep watch and provide meals. One good thing he did was sell his $180K house and after new purchase gave money to his kids for their down payments.

Even now with modest house in place and $1400 from SS and pension he can live ok. The person works because he wants to maintain certain life style not because he is starving. His kids already told him to move in with them to further savings and support but he wants to remain independent.

Most of such stories is not out of destitution but addiction to lifestyle choices. Just like 95% of homeless are due to some narco or alcohol addiction and same for 95% of hookers on the street.

Charlie is doing just fine, but Kudos for still working at 77, that is admirable !! Atleast to maintain his lifestyle he is not leeching from the Government in $16T debt or from the society.

    :D  :)
