I think going to failure stimulates an adaptive response. I think annihilation has more to do with volume and frequency.
Thanks Frederick, long sets of squats don t sound like my style but will look more into single set whole body workouts. Out of the gym with a sciatica but getting better and hopefully will go back around August.
Back from holidays and to the gym, sciatica is still felt but mild and kept in check with pragabalin 225mg a day (i would have also stopped that medication but a doctor explained it works slowly, so it's risky to give it up, in contrary to NSAIDs or antalgics) Starting with free weights and compound exercises but baby weights, quite a bit afraid. considering swimming is most advisable in my situation, short single sets workouts after swimming look quite convenient. Thanks all for bringing this up, i've restarted training several times over the years with whole body workouts but never using singles sets. An interesting link on the topic below, there seems to be quite a bit of info on the net sharing similar ideas and the same studies. I might not stick too long to this routine if the body feels good as i'm more keen on doing heavier and shorter sets but if body composition and strength improve significantly why not. http://www.muscleblitz.com/single_set.htm#axzz5NBW7vTk6 As an aside, Baron, do you mind sharing where your test levels are at on TRT ? Your upper body sure speaks in favor of single sets.
Last time I had it tested, it was around 1200 ng/dl, which is the top of the natural range of an 18 year old, which is pretty much the goal of TRT.
Good for you, it seems you have understanding doctors - there must be a reason Florida is nicknamed the TRT capital of the World. Lots of people on TRT end up with docs trying to maintain them in the 500-800 range, sometimes even lower. 1200ng/l levels must help your body composition quite a bit no matter your workout routine.
At 46 years old, it helps with my workout recovery but I still have to do everything else right to reap the full benefits. It's not a license to workout whenever you want and eat whatever you want and still look good.
