First there was the economy which Ford had nothing to do with. Carter came out with 'the misery index' which coupled unemployment figures and high interest rates and ran with it. (Note: he didn't fix it in 1980 and lost. We have a Maga economy now) Ford also pardoned Nixon without giving any rationalization. That pissed everyone off. Reagan really made Ford look bad in the primaries. Oh and btw... Reagan was way below 50% approval in '83. He won a landslide in '84. And last but not least was his famous gaffe during the debates which ended it for him. (And even at that... it was close af when the results came in. 40.8 to 39.1 popular vote) This did it in the end:
Ford is a "special case" in regard to incumbent presidents. He assumed the Oval Office without ever receiving a single vote from a citizen voter anywhere, anytime in a primary or in the general, at least for the presidency. NOT ONE VOTE. So he came in with a weakened base. ie. he had none. ZERO citizens voted for him- for president. Also, as I stated, the other part of the equation is the opposing candidate. While history shows that Carter was a weak, lousy president he nevertheless put a strong campaign strategy together and made it work. He entered the race as a low-name recognition candidate but elevated himself right off and won Iowa and NH right off to get er going- and built a coalition as he went along and made the kill. As lousy as he was, it was far, far better than what the dems are facing in this cycle. Probably the first four primaries will be split between four candidates and there are two vastly divided wings in the party, and the chances of going to a brokered convention are quite good. In other words, a complete mess. So Ford had no real legitimacy with voters because they never voted for him, not even as Vice President, and was highly vulnerable.
