Anyone remember the Bre-X scandal?

  1. Bre-X was Invesco's gold fund's largest holding. Lots of heartburn.

"Is it traded on a Canadian exchange?"
    "Yes."
    End of due diligence.

In other movie news, Thomas Peterffy chair of interactive brokers revealed in a recent interview that a bet he had with a film producer was the inspiration for Trading Places. Thomas was at lunch with the producer and a famous black actor. The movie producer bet Thomas $10,000 that he could not make the actor on options market maker on the Amex. The movie producer lost the bet and went on to produce Trading Places.

Vancouver in it's heyday was like printing money. Just follow the pump and dump rule book and don't get too greedy.

Toronto today (TSE) has a few more stringent regs but it's still companies that take stuff out of the ground. Last few years have seen pretty good returns.

Aside from Bre-x we've also had Nortel and Research in motion that slapped the buy and hold crowd.
