Here is one guy's fairly extensive comparison between ice baths and cryo: https://michaelkummer.com/health/ice-bath-vs-cryotherapy/#12-ice-baths-vs-cryotherapy-conclusion Of course, that's his opinion. Quick question for the heroes here who have done or regularly do ice baths. How does it compare to cold showers? I know that cold showers are more "user friendly," but my question is, how much more so? I ask because I have never done an ice bath and so I am curious. But please keep in mind that I refer to really cold water showers of the winter-cold variety. The cold showers I face right now are much more intense than the ones I experienced when I first started in September.
Ice baths are definitely a step above the shower. I just get in and not take my time, and for me that is better. I get the shock out of the way all at once and can get to breathing through the shock. After a minute I am good, but I know I am colder than in the shower. I would say the warm up process is longer also. Thanks for the article.
I experience the same thing. After 45 seconds the pins and needles dissipates, then its smooth sailing. I've done 4 min at 37 degrees. I practice breathwork and comes in handy for the initial shock, which is super overwhelming shock , where you start to breathe hard and can freak out if you don't control it via your breathe.
I'll add a new suck, after 5 minutes of cold showering, walking the dogs in a downpour when it's 35 degrees outside. I getting sick of weather.
Damn. The bastids took down the Wim Hof YT breathwork video, citing a copyright claim. Now I'm going to have to fly solo.
Kind of getting the idea things are going south at the Wim Hof company. It at least appears he isn't really involved in the company itself, but who knows, money can screw up well meaning people.
Looks like Wim Hof et al may be in a bit of trouble. Iceman Wim Hof Is being Sued for the Death of a California Teenager A 2022 lawsuit alleges Hof’s breathing exercises caused a 17-year-old girl to drown. The Dutch health guru seeks to dismiss the charge. https://www.outsideonline.com/outdo...rvival/wim-hof-california-lawsuit/?scope=anon The article is worth reading. I do the breathwork and the cold showers on my non-workout days, and will continue to do so. But apart from the single breathing YT video, I don't follow Hof. Stuff he says, and even some of the stuff he wrote in his book, are in cuckoo land. The article includes a link to a YT video worth watching: Scott Carney is an investigative journalist who set out to prove in 2013 that Hof was a charlatan and a quack, but became something of a WHM devotee. I read two of his books, one of which focuses on Hof and his method. However, he now has concerns about the man and his organization, which he explains in the video. As an aside, Wim evidently is not much of a health nut, which may explain why he looks older than his 64 years.
I've gotten the impression that Wim Hof has gone over to the guru side, and started to overhype the benefits. His son has come out and said he doesn't do any of the methods and is just in it for the money to be made. Too bad, as it seemed Wim had a good heart to begin with, but like gurus the world around they start to buy into their God status and it is to easy to lose oneself and forget your obligation to be honest.
