I've listened to interviews with some of these 'state and local authorities' who are blocking help and threatening to arrest people. They are downright nasty. What's disgusting hearing these 'state and local authorities' stop aid when people are dying in the middle of nowhere. You can tell they love their power and authority to tell people 'No' and Do as I say. One lady was a complete bitch. There's an old saying. "Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way." These people need to get the hell out of the way. No blockers.

Otherwise you are just peddling nonsense. They had an interview with a county coordinator yesterday who described an exact situation where a truck full of aid may be temporarily blocked. A mountain road washed out so there is only one lane in either direction. A truck driven by a private individual showed up (not signed in and uncoordinated) with aid donate by others. All-in-all the heart of the driver is in the right place. However he is blocked from driving up the mountain because the Red Cross convoy is on the way down the mountain and there is only a single lane road available. The driver of the private truck was requested to sign in at the county coordination center and he would be given a time slot when the aid truck can be driven up the mountain -- along with other aid trucks forming a convoy and escorted by firefighters who know the path & assist the truck drivers. There are endless public service announcements on our local airwaves right now saying don't drive to the mountains -- the roads are CLOSED (meaning you are not allowed to drive on them without permission). If you do go to the impacted areas in the mountains to deliver aid then you must call the appropriate local emergency county coordination center -- and the phone numbers are provided. The sole situation I am aware of in which someone was threatened with arrest was a private helicopter pilot in the early days who was doing search and rescue without coordination with the county command center. One day later after he checked-in and coordinated with the county command center -- no problems.
You know --- when I go to a hotel and they are fully booked then I don't sit there and whine about it. In fact if there is some type of convention in town or some type of natural disaster occurring then most of the local hotels are going to be fully booked. This gets into the next question of value. Certainly federal employees and state employees who are there for the rescue and assistance response are certainly providing more value to the operation then the people who have rescued. Sorry, that's just the way it is. The government responders need to be near the site of the disaster to have full impact. The people who are rescued can be sent a couple hours down the road by bus where there is plenty of hotel space in Charlotte and elsewhere. This is the hard reality.
