Anvil problems this morning?

  1. One question.

Do you trade "remotely" from home or in an office made for trading?

My experience has been that "remote" traders usually have a much larger knowledge base to work from when it comes to sorting out "latency" and platform issues.

For example, ask someone that trades out of an office what a simple "trace-route" is and they will look at you like you asked them whether or not someone put a "trace" on their phone.

For me, therein lies the REAL issue.

    :D

P.S. I had no data-feed issues today, nor did I have any yesterday in the last hour when CNBC's Gasparino came out with AMBAC Financial news again. In fact, my AMBAC quotes were fairly orderly. No freezing whatsoever.

  2. I would tend to agree with the above.

I would also say that the Assent "tech" guys back in NJ are extremely helpful, and more often than not when I have an "issue" it is because of something on MY end not being right.

Ditto. Anvil ran great on these two stocks when they spiked. It handled the spike much better then it did on these two stocks earlier in the week.

  6. This is exactly what I'm talking about. All my higher vol stocks, the problem isn't noticable, whether its appl/rimm or my slower vol stocks like c/wm.

But thinner volatile stocks, gs is fine, but MA/FSLR/BIDU

the freezes are quite frankly bad.

p.s. I'm am not saying this is Anvil's/Assent's fault. i'm just stating what is going on with me. Looks like i'm not the only one, which is surprising because i'm certain this is a niche problem (i mean common, how many people out there trade fslr/bidu and notice this? Would seem only scalpers would even notice or care, and most folks probably aren't trading these stocks for 15-30 cents where a 1/2 freeze is so costly as to be noticed.

Assuming this is an issue within anvil, I can't see any reason why Assent would even care to bend over backwards to fix a problem like this since it probably effects less then .5 % of their business and it doesn't really provide any volume anyways.

But like I said before, these guys have been around a long damn time and their platform has always had reputation for being one of the best, if not the best, in the industry. From this point of view, its only a matter of time before issues like this are either resolved internally, or via tech support.

Have you tried contacting their tech support about this issue?

  7. Anyone that is connected as a trader to Assent is well aware that they have chosen to build-out a "multi-cast" network connection to ARCA over the past month . . . which is what ARCA has recently switched to. ARCA is no longer supporting the TCP/IP network which Assent has been on previously.

Everyone is now on the SAME page, so we should start to see a much more stable platform once the build-out of this new network is complete. You can only bring on brand new state-of-the-art processors and servers to handle the massive loads of data, for so long. We are talking 60-80,000 updates per second now in these markets! The demand on the IT infrastructure has literally tripled in just a matter of months. And it's not just Assent or ARCA that are dealing with these issues . . . it's also the NYSE as well.

Sometimes, you have to build a new network in order to relieve the "bottlenecks".

    :)

  8. I've heard this too. This is exactly what I'm talking about. While genesis might have gotten their multicast network up and running sooner, Assent is an industry leader that year after year people I know have noted as having an amazing platform in anvil.

Like I said before, tts only a matter of time before these issues disappear either internally, or through their tech support. They've been in the industry forever; its almost a guarantee that they'll continue to adapt to whatever changes necessary to provide the type of service they've been known for over all these years.

Pretty interesting guys, do you see particular venues stuck... and the bursts, do they happen in certain venues as well?

I dont really trade the thinner stocks, so I probably dont notice this either. However, I can tell you that if the orders are kind of sitting around doing nothing you may want to look at WHAT type of orders you send.

I had the tech support guys call Nasdaq about 5-6 weeks ago because I felt like I kept misisng out on volume. As it turns out, the orders were routed away about 4-5 times each and by the time they came back to NSDQ.... it was 4 seconds later and I was now at the BACK of the line.

Depending on the market, I switch over to ISO orders or on my box I send non pro-active orders. Even better, use the OUCH connection to NSDQ on Anvil (send an ISLD order, instead of NSDQ)

Now do me a favor, don't steal my volume!!! LOL :D
