Ending the violence in America with rioter prosecutions and use of National Guard
    https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/sep/6/ending-the-violence-in-america-with-rioter-prosecu/

Some familiar with American history point to incidents of rioting and looting such as the 1773 Boston Tea Party led by “revolutionary” Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty against the oppressive regime of George III as a catalytic event in the birth of the nation.

Lost in a historical footnote is the fact that the price of tea in Boston — even with the tax, was lower than the street price in London due to the fact the crown was seriously underwriting the cost of shipping. Ultimately British forces were unable to do what was needed, over years of protracted fighting, to suppress the revolution.

Those rioting, looting and burning across the nation today have similarly hijacked the mantra “racial justice” as an excuse for fomenting a new kind of revolution against the nation as we know it. Just as the early revolutionaries were a loose collaboration of groups, today’s revolution is a collection of Black Lives Matter, Antifa, Marxists, anarchists and nihilists. They have little in the way of a common ideology, other than contempt for the existing establishment and President Trump.

Exactly why this situation has evolved at this time, and with this speed will be left to future historians, but in several ways it is a perfect storm of converging events. The COVID-19 pandemic has left a large number of people unemployed and anxious to leave a lockdown of their homes; extensive press reporting of the murder of George Floyd and others provided a catalyst for protest; defunding and abandonment of police forces in many cities run by liberal and left-wing politicians provided the opening that these extremists needed.

Making matters worse, extremists are engaging in these unlawful and often murderous acts because they can, and in too many cases there are simply no consequences. In most all of the cities suffering from rioting, looting and related criminal activity there are some “arrests” which are never prosecuted by left-wing state and local prosecutors.

At the same time, no cash bail “reforms” and bail provided by the rioters’ supporters mean that any arrested are back on the street almost immediately. Currently they are joined by thousands released from prison as possible COVID-19 victims.

Democratic and left-wing claims that this is “Donald Trump’s America” is a nonsensical deflection. Mr.Trump did not appoint any of the left-wing governors, mayors or prosecutors that have condoned the unending violence and failed to prosecute the rioters. They were elected to office by Democratic voters, and in several cases bankrolled by George Soros.

If they were federal officials they would have been fired months ago. A critical question remains as to what offenses are federal ones where the 300 or so arrested on federal charges will be tried and will any convictions result? Without real convictions and prison time there will be nothing to deter future violence. One recent poll shows that 85% of the population want these people prosecuted, and it just is not happening. Possibly people in the impacted cities need to reconsider who they voted for.

After months of largely ignoring or downplaying the violence as non-existent or a “summer of love” they have been finally embarrassed into at least some reporting, and clinging to the idea that the solution lies in “healing” and “community understanding.” These tropes and sound bites have no basis in reality. As a practical matter there is no common ground between the rioters, anarchists and others looting and burning the cities.

Trump and virtually every law enforcement official in the nation are on the same page here. It is essential that mobs engaging in rioting, looting and violence need to be confronted on the spot with overwhelming force — whether it be local police, state or federal forces. It’s really a numbers game to start.

Use of National Guard to support local police is nothing new, illegal, or unique to the Trump administration. Presidents at least since Dwight Eisenhower have employed troops where needed, and in almost all cases at the request of state governors who appreciated the situation.

Mr.Trump is reluctant to use the Insurrection Act which would enable their use without the governor’s request, and has repeatedly offered to provide the support that is desperately needed. Where the National Guard has been used of late it has proven to be highly effective, much to the chagrin of Democratic governors and mayors who decried their use.

The other half of the solution lies in a more effective approach to prosecution of those engaged in these crimes. The culture and reality of no consequences needs to be reversed. Looters and rioters are now supported by not only left-wing politicians but academics and writers who have sought to justify such activities as reparations for some perceived social injustice, a need to feed COVID-19-stricken families, and various other mythical reasons. Exactly how looting a store of TV sets and Gucci bags feeds a family is not entirely clear, but we are told not to sweat the small stuff.

Apart from left-wing theology, the issue of actual prosecution of the lawless remains. Federal statutes do not cover the full range of crimes involved in the rioting, looting, burning and destruction. Even murder in most cases is not a federal offense. Prosecutors in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Portland, Seattle and elsewhere continue to “dump” these cases with abandon.

Their message to the rioters and looters is clear — help yourself — we are on your side. This is not Donald Trump’s America, and voters need to decide in their state and local elections if this is really what they want.

  5. We ought to keep track of and be supportive Daniel Thompson. He sounds like a stand up guy. Daniel stated the reason why he quit as reporter is his boss insisted on running a senational headline that although was factual, did not represent the nature of what was going on in the peaceful protest.

Lord, we need people of character in our media who are willing to hold others of their own, accountable.

  6. File charges on them and BLM for any serious laws broken. Document the lack of media coverage on social media. Think these guys were looking for a “little protection” money?

Let' see what residents think of their Portland city council...

Portland City Council returns from two-week break, criticized

The Portland City Council—which has not met in two weeks despite nightly unrest in the city’s downtown—will be back in session on Tuesday, according to a report.

The Oregonian newspaper wrote that while violent protests raged the government body “hung out its gone fishin’ sign.”

Jim Mark, a real estate developer, wrote in an email obtained by the paper that the “inaction and lack of collaboration by our elected officials over the past 90 days is absolutely unacceptable. This inaction has created a dangerous environment where many local businesses are struggling to survive and where few people want to visit, work and live.”

The protests in Portland against police violence have been national news stories for weeks and seem to have no end in sight. On Saturday, police confirmed that tear gas was deployed to defend themselves and said 59 people were arrested, ranging in age from 15 to 50.

Molotov cocktails thrown in the street during a march sparked a large fire and prompted police to declare a riot. Video posted online appeared to show tear gas being deployed to clear protesters from what police said was an unpermitted demonstration.

The paper reported that the vacation was announced in early July. The paper said two commissioners were either on vacation or a required furlough during the time.

Mayor Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, mentioned the issue of the lack of political unity in the city late last month, the paper reported. He mentioned a time, in 2019, when officials helped extinguish potential clashes in the city.

“That’s the kind of coalition that we’re missing today,” he told the paper. “We don’t have elected officials on the same page denouncing violence. We don’t have community organizations coming together collectively in that kind of way with that kind of single-minded determination and focus to denounce violence.”

DHS ordered to align white supremacy and antifa threats with WH wishes:

Whistle-Blower Says D.H.S. Downplayed Threats From Russia and White Supremacists
The former head of the Homeland Security Department’s intelligence division has accused three senior leaders of warping the agency around President Trump’s rhetoric.

WASHINGTON — Top officials with the Department of Homeland Security directed agency analysts to downplay the threat of violent white supremacy and of Russian election interference, according to a whistle-blower complaint filed by a top intelligence official with the department.

WASHINGTON — Top officials with the Department of Homeland Security directed agency analysts to downplay the threat of violent white supremacy and of Russian election interference, according to a whistle-blower complaint filed by a top intelligence official with the department.

Brian Murphy, the former head of the intelligence branch of the Homeland Security Department, said in a whistle-blower complaint filed on Tuesday that he was directed by Chad F. Wolf, the acting secretary of the department, to stop producing assessments on Russian interference. The department’s second highest ranked official, Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, also ordered him to modify intelligence assessments to make the threat of white supremacy “appear less severe” and include information on violent “left-wing” groups, according to the complaint, which was released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee.

In so doing, the two top officials at the department — both appointees of President Trump — appeared to shape the agency’s views around Mr. Trump’s rhetoric and interests.

Mr. Murphy, who was removed from his post in August after his office compiled intelligence reports on protesters and journalists in Portland, Ore., asserted in the complaint that he was retaliated against for raising concerns to superiors and cooperating with the department’s inspector general. He asked the inspector general to investigate.

“The protected disclosures that prompted the retaliatory personnel actions at issue primarily focused on the compilation of intelligence reports and threat assessments that conflicted with policy objectives set forth by the White House and senior Department of Homeland Security” officials, Mr. Murphy’s lawyers wrote in the 24-page complaint.

The department has stalled in releasing an implementation plan on combating white supremacy and other forms of domestic terrorism for nearly a year. Hours before the release of the complaint, Mr. Wolf highlighted the threat of “white supremacists extremists or anarchists extremists” in an annual address summarizing the work of the department. He said the department would release a blueprint to combat the threats this week, although it was not clear if it would be made public.

House Intelligence Committee Democrats said on Wednesday that the complaint detailed violations of law and abuses of authority that put “our nation and its security at grave risk.”

“We will get to the bottom of this, expose any and all misconduct or corruption to the American people, and put a stop to the politicization of intelligence,” said Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the committee’s chairman, in an accompanying statement.

The whistle-blower complaint comes almost exactly a year after Mr. Schiff’s panel publicized the existence of another intelligence-related complaint about Mr. Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joseph R. Biden Jr., a document that ultimately led to the president’s impeachment by the House. Mark S. Zaid and Andrew P. Bakaj, the Washington lawyers who represented the Ukraine whistle-blower, whose identity remained anonymous throughout the impeachment saga, are now working for Mr. Murphy.

Mr. Schiff said in his letter that he had asked the national security official to sit for a deposition on Sept. 21, and a public hearing could follow. But this time, with fewer than eight weeks until Election Day, the House is likely to have little meaningful recourse beyond publicizing Mr. Murphy’s claims.

CNN first reported the existence of the complaint and the details about its contents.

In a statement, Mr. Zaid said that they had informed the executive and legislative branches of his claims and would cooperate with congressional oversight requests.

“Mr. Murphy followed proper lawful whistle-blower rules in reporting serious allegations of misconduct against D.H.S. leadership, particularly involving political distortion of intelligence analysis and retaliation,” he said.
