North Carolina legislature supports stronger penalties and making rioters civilly responsible for paying financial damages. Some NC lawmakers want tougher penalties for rioters https://www.cbs17.com/news/north-carolina-news/some-nc-lawmakers-want-tougher-penalties-for-rioters/ Following a summer of countless protests and demonstrations, some leaders of the North Carolina General Assembly want tougher penalties for people who commit felonies during protests and riots. “I know we all support protesting, that’s fine,” said House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland). “But some of the lawlessness has gotten out of hand and riots.” Moore mentioned the possibility of stricter legislation during a coronavirus press briefing on Wednesday. He explained, “There are talks about for example if someone is out committing a felony during a riot, doing like a 48-hour hold as we do in domestic violence cases, kind of a cool-down period.” Kerwin Pittman is a social justice activist in Raleigh. Pittman tells CBS 17 he peacefully protested for George Floyd in downtown Raleigh, and most recently, for Jacob Blake. He believes adding penalties only demonstrates the need for people to protest. “It is extremely egregious to think that any legislator would try and demonstrate this type of law and order against individuals who are trying to speak out against racial injustice and oppression,” he said. Moore said another idea being considered is increasing liability for people who loot and damage property. He explained, “Something I think is a great idea is subjecting them to civil liability for going out and destroying somebody’s property, punitive damages.” Pittman’s concern is that in a crowded protest, it can be difficult to pinpoint who’s responsible, which could lead to unjustified arrests. He tells CBS 17 that lawmakers considering these ideas should spend a day walking in their shoes. “The issue is, they’re [state lawmakers] so disconnected from the individuals who are out there protesting, that they feel the need to lock these individuals up and consider them a threat to public safety,” said Pittman. “But if they were to participate in the process, they would get a clear understanding of what’s going on and why individuals are really out there on the ground.”
Isn't this redundant? Wanton destruction of private property is already punishable under the law. Isn't this the same argument cons use against hate crime legislation?
Criminally criminals are very rarely held financially responsible for the destruction of property in criminal court. These proposed changes would hold rioters financially responsible for the damage they cause -- without the business owners having to attempt to sue them in civil court. Long overdue in my opinion.
In this case the "peeps" and the mob are two entirely different groups. I agree that the people who live in these crime ravaged communities just want some peace and quiet, and a much needed improved relationship with the police. A believable promise of that is unlikely from either party at the federal level. The mob are mostly professional criminals and paid anarchists who don't even live in these communities and couldn't care less about bringing a peaceful resolution to any of said grievances. Their game is causing as much violence and chaos as they can. Distinguishing between these two groups can at times be problematic, but someone better figure it out otherwise more than a few innocents on all sides of this are going to be caught in the crossfire.
De-escalating comes from inside a community. Sure there are hot-heads and planners but if they can't recruit as there is no will, they give up. There are several Machiavellian plots running in parallel plus random disgruntled stuff that belongs to none of them. Russia is absolutely running ops to stir up the Marxist/Leninist idealist prone, it is a re-run of the cold-war op before the collapse of the USSA with Trump helping Putin from self-interest. The difference is anyone with a brain on the left knows that the intellectual leaders will be first against the wall as once they realise it was a trap, utopia not going to happen they become opposition. This is not news and stops them progressing past a point, its like climbing a sandhill for them in a shallow consumerist (hellbound etc.) population. Fascism/totalitarianism on the other hand is all about another game which nobody but a few will enjoy. Muttonheads who overstate the reality are the real issue. This was a lesson of Golding's Lord of the Flies, fear of "the Beast" which is only in the minds of the too young and too savage. Don't gift a few piss-ants leverage over you is another way to put it. BLM/Antifa or anyone is not going to take over America unless you feed the fears, this is a firework, treat it as such.
dang OP; better luck next time; assistant secretary of counter terrorism and threat prevention confirming the biggest domestic threat isn't "antifa" but right winger extremists. Even calls the antifa narrative a red herring....brutal:
BREAKING NEWS! Antifa cockroach shot and killed by police in Portland. No doubt the lefties - including Biden- will want the police prosecuted and flags to be lowered.
