I am gonna share this here, by a guy who seems to knwo what he is talking about:

"I am 70 years old, male, and have been doing research into supplements for anti-aging purposes for the last 4 years. Here are some of the things I am consuming to help with my healthspan, and potentially improve my lifespan.

glucosamine/chondroitin -- a 9 year cohort study of thousands indicated that for those consuming this supplement, there was a 39 percent decrease in all cause mortality and a 65 percent decrease in cardiovascular mortality

selenium combined with coq10 -- a years long study of hundreds in Scandinavia indicated that there was a 50 percent reduction in cardiovascular events for those consuming 200 micrograms of selenium along with 200 mg of coq10.

an analysis of old age mice versus younger mice showed that out of 3888 genes that were different between the two populations, 2000 genes were altered towards the younger phenotype if the old age mice consumed nicotinamide riboside.

Hesperetin, a metabolite of Hesperidin, promotes longevity and delays aging in naturally aged mice by activating the CISD2 gene located on chromosome 4.

acarbose, a drug used to help type 2 diabetics, improves health and longevity in aging mice.

Calcium alpha ketoglutarate, after 7 months of use, conferred an 8 year decrease biological age in a DNA methylation test.

  2. Pekelo, thanks for this.

The acarbose story is strange and hard to sort out right now... evidence suggests that its effects are mediated through the gut microbiome and that it may actually accelerate telomere shortening. Unlike some of the other supplements he mentioned, it seems like it may be too early to move forward with that one.

    Black berries, bluberries
\staw berries are listed in my anti-ageing book . I'll aim @ posting some more if my ginko biloba works this week.......................................:D:D

  4. A good diet is important for good skills. Green leafy vegetables, fruits, and Nuts & seeds are great for skin. I also drink a lot of smoothies.

I like the idea of being healthier, having close to full mobility, clear thought processes up to the day I kick off, but just living longer doesn't do it for me. Nor does the idea of living to 130 and being broke at 95 paying for supplements. I do use a couple supplements, but mainly for the past few years am simply eating healthier.

Don't forget the importance of exercise...weightlifting and cardio.

I know someone that did weightlifting, cardio, and great nutrition but then one week he was killed in a snowmobiling accident at age 42 although he looked like he was 30 years of age...the same age as his young wife.

  8. I've been reading books that discuss supplements to improve healthspan and lifespan for a long time and I consider The Kaufmann Protocol: Why We Age and How to Stop It to be the most convincing one I've read so far.

She systematically describes how our different systems break down over time, similar to the aging of the different systems in an automobile or another complex type of equipment. She makes a compelling argument that if we do nothing but eat right and exercise properly our different bodily systems will still degrade in different ways over time because that is their natural progression.

She then provides evidence from peer-reviewed studies that some supplements can be used to slow the breakdown of this physiological system or that system. She categorizes them based on what systems they work on and has a nice table in the back of the book to summarize the top recommendations.

A followup book was published a couple of months ago called The Kaufmann Protocol: Aging Solutions. I can't comment on that one yet but will read it soon.

  9. There is no supplement that is even going to be close to calorie restriction, weight training and getting your VO2 max as high as you can.

Drugs like metformin have a risk of having no clue what the effects will be from 30+ years of using the drug.

Testosterone replacement is the only thing I will consider at some point. Supplement wise, I just take vitamin C and vitamin D but if I didn't it probably wouldn't matter much.

It is always an easy sell to con people into believing there is hope in a gel cap that is so ineffective it isn't even classified as a drug. When you are young the con is to convince you it will build muscle to get partner. When you are old the con is to convince you it will keep death away.

  10. fans of Coq10 might find MitoQ interesting. much more bioavailability as they improved the delivery system and has many studies published/pending.
