China for the first time made clear what it wants to see from the U.S. in talks to end their trade war, laying bare the deep differences that still exist between the two sides.

In a wide-ranging interview with Chinese media after talks in Washington ended Friday, Vice Premier Liu He said that in order to reach an agreement the U.S. must remove all extra tariffs, set targets for Chinese purchases of goods in line with real demand, and ensure that the text of the deal is “balanced” to ensure the “dignity” of both nations.

Liu’s three conditions underscore the work still to be done if an accord is to be reached between the world’s two largest economies. President Donald Trump’s administration told China it has a month to seal a trade deal or face tariffs on all its exports to the U.S.

That threat was made during talks Friday in Washington, hours after Trump upped the ante by imposing a second round of punitive duties on $200 billion in Chinese goods. The talks are under close scrutiny across global financial markets, and U.S. stocks turned positive after negotiators on both sides said the session had gone fairly well.

Liu said both sides agreed to keep talking despite what he called “some temporary resistance and distractions,’’ and to hold future meetings in Beijing. He dismissed the idea that talks had broken down. “It’s normal to have hiccups during the negotiations. It’s inevitable.” China hasn’t yet detailed how it will retaliate to the latest increase in tariffs.

Liu also struck a note of defiance. “For the interest of the people of China, the people of U.S. and the the people of the whole world, we will deal with this rationally,’ the vice premier said. “But China is not afraid, nor are the Chinese people,” adding that “China needs a cooperative agreement with equality and dignity.”

Securing a trade deal is likely to get harder from here unless outside factors, such as an economic downturn, force a compromise, according to Ely Ratner, a China expert who served in the administration of President Barack Obama and is now director of studies at the Center for a New American Security think-tank.

“The question is can the Chinese come back and offer enough such that Trump can sell it?’’ he said. “I think it is going to be hard for them to do that in the face of Trump escalating. I think it gets harder as this thing goes on, and it gets harder politically for Trump.

I am not making this up... he used to be a personal friend (Hangzhou used to be such a small place)... and in 1996 he asked me to join him (ChinaPages.com... remember? lol)... but later he became too big for a small potato like me lol.

It's interesting that when you look back at life there are so many butterfly-effect moments lol... what could have been.

But no regrets though... life is great.

  6. China's definition of "balanced"... is that they keep the advantage they already have on the most important topics.

Trump's running his mouth... "We're making progress." "I'm gonna win".

Not so fast. The Chinese have LOTS of patience where Trump has practically none.

  7. I have so many but my all time favorite is dating a woman in NY who turned out to be a somewhat famous media personality, call her Ana, and I had no idea. I still get texts from a friend whenever Ana posts a bikini pic or two on social media. Looks damn good still.

Ana always used to say I should be in movies. And I wanted to be in movies. And I had no idea that she was in the business. She just told me that she worked in the arts which I thought was like hipster theater and meant she had a lot of time off in between gigs. Still have her on whatsapp though haven't texted in a few years now...

Ahh just creeped her twitter. What could have been indeed.

this type of post is not good for your street credit lol... there is no substance here.

usually the side with the trade deficit can't lose... because the surplus side relies on the cash flow.

Trump has nothing to lose... 2nd term is almost a lock.. guy is set for life anyway.... but the China leaders are already facing tremendous pressure.. the GDP growth target has to be hit... 250b goods tariff hike translates to 0.5% drag on the GDP, that is huge... if you put on another 350b that will cripple their economy.... on the US side the drag is 0.1 - 0.2%

look how a real argument can be made here? put in some substance, that helps on the street credit.... of course not saying I am always correct, legit counter arguments are always welcome.... but empty posts are just a waste of time.

the more you observe Trump's tweets -

guy is a genius lol - he puts out minimum 1 tweet per day citing no obstruction no collusion to keep them TDS people all wired up every F day lol.... and these guys will just keep eating the nothing burger till the next election.... so brilliant.

actually I think that was part of the reason he let this thing drag on for 2 years, could have certainly fired Mueller or something other stuff to end it sooner... but then that would just shift his political enemies' attention to something else that may actually have substance

so now that the investigation is finally over, he just have to bring it up every day lol... it's like 'lookie here'... delicious burger lol omg this guy is so F brilliant.
