Grand scale research like this needs to be subsidized by the govt. Just like the lunar and atomic programs were. The same should be done to a greater extent with fusion research. And carbon needs to taxed so that market forces can work to find the best way toward low carbon energy.

Honestly, as much as we complain about the government and all it's irrational, manic-depressive shenanigans, nothing is going to change without a full-blown revolution. Since that really isn't going to happen, perhaps the better idea is to join the crowd. That is, brain-storm a portfolio of wacky ideas (like the counting birds grant above), obtain government funding, and kick-back some of it to the sponsoring Rep(s) and Senators(s). And live happily ever after... Who needs morals or ethics in a world lacking in both... All that matters is that the brother gets paid...
