  3. "For all practical purposes has been running a bear fund" meaning that he's not been running a bear fund, it's not marketed as a bear fund, it's not for any purpose a bear fund. It's a hedge fund.

Notice that he's below the highwater mark from early 2008, over six years ago. Six years of dead money, plus a 35% drawdown.

Let me help you out here. Most BEAR funds are not short stock funds. Bear funds in the fund industry typically are defined as funds whose primary strategy is not being long risk assets. For example, the most famous of them, David Tice, has very few short stock holdings. A majority of his holdings were actually in hard assets like Gold, Bonds, or other alternative assets. This is EXACTLY how Hoenig runs his fund. He does not buy risk assets. He looks for alternative investments. I would guess his portfolio contains 10% short stocks or indices, on par with David Tice and the rest in alternative assets. The major difference in performance between Tice and Hoenig can be attributed to the fact that Hoenig was never a huge believer in metals where as metals make up a large portion of Tice's holdings. So yes, Hoenig's fund can and is in the category of a bear fund.

Wow, a lecture in data mining. Neat, teach me more. Yeah I can play that game too. Had you bought his fund last March, you would be up 50% now. Spare me the data mining. Either look at the total population set or none at all. Otherwise we can cherry pick any data point in the set to produce whatever figure we want.

  7. Generic hedge fund:

The Fund’s goal is absolute return, ideally earning a profit regardless of the condition of the stock market or larger macroeconomic environment. To accomplish this, I use strategies such as buying and selling stocks short, trading options, commodities, currencies, bonds, loans and other instruments.

Yeah dude, I'm aware of the instruments an alternative asset firm uses. When are you going to start adding some value to this thread?

  9. I'll post again once the CP hits a new high in his fund. I hope Baron is still running the site by then. It could take another few years, maybe a decade, if it ever happens. Global warming or endemic Chicago gang violence might overtake the city in the meanwhile, you never know.
