Amy Coney Barrett - let the games begin

  1. "Pundit" on Fox opines and cautions that we have to keep in mind that Harriet Myers (a bush nominee) and Robert Bork fell out at the last minute so blah, blah, blah, blah.

I take the obvious point that anything can happen but those would be two piss poor examples to mention in regard to Amy Barrett. Neither one of them had been a judge or had been confirmed once already by the Senate. Bork was a professor with no experience on the bench and Harriet Myers was, what, Bush's legal counsel or something.

The real watch-out situation should be one akin to what Kavanaugh went through, wherein the nominees credentials and experience are so impeccable that they have to just flat-out frame him with a scam. I don't think we will be hearing about Amy servicing people in the rape line, but you never know. Kavanaugh never did that type of thing either and that did not spare him.

  3. I read an interesting tale of two very different strategies about court nominees in the New Crock Times.

The NYT reports that just before the midterm election in Obama's first term - when Obama had both houses- he met with Ruthie in a private luncheon meeting in the White House. According to the article he couched the purpose of the meeting as something related to lower court management or getting her recommendations for certain lower court justices, whatever. I read it on my phone so it was a little choppy. Anyway, according to the article, the real purpose was to discuss with her his belief that dem senators were are risk of losing the Senate (which they did) so did she maybe want to retire while they controlled the senate.

He obviously was not able to close the deal and get her to retire, and some staffers say that he handled it so gingerly that she probably did not even know that he was confronting her with a scenario where she needed to take a clear stand. You know sort of like the way Obama negotiates with Iran and China. Okay, I digressed. or maybe it was more relevant than we would like to think.

In contrast, the article says that Trump more or less made Kennedy's retirement happen by playing ball with him. He had Don McGahn work with Kennedy and basically tell him that the pubs had control of the Senate for now but nothing is guaranteed kind of thing. And if you are planning to retire or thinking about it, let's talk and see how you can participate in your replacement and what do you want? Bottom line, allegedly, Kennedy said he was willing to retire if one of his former clerks would be replacing him. BOOM! DONE!!! Hello, Justice Kavanaugh.

As I said, a tale of two very different presidents and styles.

The left will conduct scurrilous attacks on the nominee and apparently her children.

That seems like a bad idea 6 weeks from a national election. Certainly its going to cost the Democrats many many votes particularly from mothers. Given the leftist rioting, looting and murder that we have seen the conduct we are about to witness in the Senate will push many women over the line.

Its a display of stupidity that is breathtaking. Threats of civil war aren't helping Democrats.
