Why are you a "shitty investor" Bob? You can trade short term, but can't seem to put aside your "daytime emotions" long enough to see the forest...?

I trade for a living. Performance only RIA means no gains = no $ for me. My Clients are 90% retirement accounts, and I trade them as I would my own Mother's money. I position, and swing trade. The turnover is high, but they don't mind paying the taxes (for now:eek: ) as they're making $$$$.

    That's my daytime job.

In the evenings, I'll trade Fx for my own account from home. Totally different trading style than the above. Night and day.

In looking at the big picture, I always try to make sure the following are in place:

6-8 months of living expenses in cash, gold and silver. This is $$$$ I can get to in less than 5 minutes. (I also own firearms that I am trained with as if the $ were to collapse, we'll need them, sadly...)

No-Load Mutual Funds. Yes, I go on about mut fund managers at times letting money go bye bye, but there ARE some very good funds out there if you'll do your homework. Allocating some $$$$ to 5-7 of these will help remove the emotion from YOUR investing. Sure, I rotate funds at times for reasons that are rules to me. You can do the same.

When I managed money for Accredited-only investors, I used to allocate for example,
    5% Private Oil/Gas
    5% All cash private REIT
    5-8% Commodities
5% Private equipment leasing program (a pseudo-hedge for inflation. If companies have equipment on low interest paper, and rates go up, they continue their leases vs. buy new...)

The remaining $ would be allocated among two asset managers, the last myself, the remainder in cash according to investment style. This example allocation reduced standard deviation due to the non-correlations, and has never let me down as long as I follow my INVESTMENT (long term) rules.

You don't need to be accredited to have a retirement portfolio as above. You can use ETF's, and as you know they're liquid (most are. Lol) vs. the above illiquid private placement investments. I have my own rules for weighting, and entry/exit when using these ETF''s, but each to his own. It works for me. :)

Why can't you consider getting your emotion under control, and you'll see that you trade better AND invest better. Sounds like emotion is a problem here. Do tiger sharks have any emotion when they eat a garbage can, license plate, surfer (ouch!), sea turtle, etc.,? No! All they do is eat, grow, and reproduce. They use ZERO emotion when eating. They spit out what doesn't "taste right," and devour what does without a second thought... Read "Trading for a living" if you want to find out what kind of trader you are as emotion is the driver behing you winning or losing in a minus sum game in 2011...
