Accounting for sudden velocity?

I've been running into this problem time and time again where I'm actually making some decent money but then I end up losing quite an amount because of the value of my currency pair suddenly shooting up for no apparent reason and as I said I either end up losing money or in the kinder scenario I end up having to wait half the day for the price to fall again, sometimes overnight.

I wanted to ask, is this simply bad luck and random chance that I have to account for? Or is it something completely avoidable that I'm missing entirely? Even if it is random chance is there any way I can avoid this type of problem?

For the record this is the main thing that's been stopping me from making money so far. I doubt it's because of lack of capital. I'm currently trading in the USD/CHF.
