Except there is discretion to how the law is enforced, which is why the feds don't make it a habit of locking up pot smokers. There was discretion to immigration laws as well, until sessions decided to take that away from immigration courts.
This is white nationalist rhetoric. There are very few people advocating "open borders" between countries with large socioeconomic differences. That makes no sense. The place to begin is with a realistic view of the present situation; not some screwball ideas coming from the ideological, political rhetoric of a demagogue. .
Yes, Illegals slowed coming from Mexico and the big increase has been from Central America and the new scam is everyone is now an asylum seeker. All Trump is trying to do, which I admit he is using human beings as leverage, just as his opponents are doing, is get a real border policy in place BEFORE granting amnesty, which is coming and there's no doubt about that. Shit deal as it is, I'm okay with that. What the establishment wants is the amnesty first with some promise that they'll get on that border security. Heard it before, they lied, as to be expected, and I ain't buying it this time. And again, if congress is so upset that Trump is enforcing this "brutal" law, then congress has the full power and authority to change that law at their will. Why isn't that being done if things are so, so terrible? Yes, the president could do it with a 5 minute phone call and just quit enforcing the law. Congress would take a day or two longer. They've had the time, they have the time. They do not have the will because it is not in their best interest to act swiftly. It's campaign season and damaging Trump is far more important than some suffering family.
It is up to the Republicans who control Congress. They can't do anything because they have a white nationalist subparty within their ranks who prefer to burn down the house rather than fix the roof. This is exactly the same reason that the Democrats, when they controlled both Houses, could not ram through a reasonably effective version of Obamacare with a public option and block the Court decision of Medicaid. They had within their ranks just enough Democrats thoroughly in the Insurance Industry pocket to make a good Bill impossible without a few Republican votes. Now to get something done it would actually take quite a few Democrat votes because the radical Republican House contingency is relatively large.
There shouldn't be any discretion at all. The law is the law. There might be discretion on the sentencing of a guilty person dependent on the severity of the crime, but the law should be universally followed. However, I can see how a law might have lax enforcement when there are few violations of it. Immigration has become a major problem, with the burdening of resources and expense being pushed to the taxpayer. Thus, it has reached its breaking point. Now folks are like "we need to enforce the law". Finally.
Trump is operating the way a dictator would. As long has he does that and continues to lie, then it is important that we do what we can to see that he is thrown out of office just as quickly as possible. The country is at a crossroads. Preservation of the few remaining shreds of democracy and human decency at the national level is far more important than any immigration problem, or any other problem we have right now. Our problem is Trump!
Yes, the republicans are largely in control, but I'm hearing plenty of them pissing and moaning about this problem. You'll note in my posts I'm not making distinctions between republicans and democrats. The entire congress is to blame for this. They have the power. Presidential approval in not needed for them to pass any law they damn well please. The current Republican congress is comprised of cowards, and the current democratic make up is obstructionist. When the democrats are in power, it's gets flipped. Business as usual year after year, decade after decade. For them it's just one long game that never ends.
No, Trump is doing what he said he would do. Expose all the corruption and incompetence in D.C. Throw stones at the messenger all you like, it's on congress. The man is just trying to get congress to do their jobs. You're criminals in congress depend on people like you. Give'em a pass again.
Well said. It is going to take compromise to get anything done. We can't all have our way all the time. There is a contingency in the House that is plainly out of step with both mainstream Republicans and mainstream Democrats and with a majority of the population. That's a BIG problem when it comes to compromising and working together to solve problems.
