A Waste of a Heart

Let's step back to two years ago, the boy did not qualify for a heart transplant because he failed every single one of his drug screenings. You have to be clean in order to get a organ transplant.

The "civil rights activists" framed this that he was being denied a heart due to his low grades and being in trouble with the law. The medical committee stated very clearly however that they do not consider grades or criminal record in their decisions for organ transplants only medical information.

Unfortunately pressure from the "civil rights activists" forced the medical community to override their medical decision.

The end game was that someone who did not even qualify for a heart (due to his continuing drug abuse) received a heart - which he promptly wasted.

15yo. So very much of his life left to straighten out. Totally worth giving him a chance.

Which part of medically not qualified to receive a transplant due to drug abuse do you fail to understand?

An exception was made under the circumstances. It's heartening to know that a kid not born to better circumstances has a civil rights group in his or her corner. I remember here in Canada when they had to crack down on "queue jumpers", typically the wealthy and/or powerful, trying to get ahead in line for themselves or their kids for transplants and such.

The kid could not even stay off drugs for a mere 3 month period to qualify for a heart transplant.... and you believe he deserves an exception under the circumstances.

Do you have any words for all of the victims of his crimes. What about some words for the elderly woman he was shooting while breaking into her home. How about some support for the owner of the car he stole. Any support for the 33 year old woman he hit with the car. Where is your sympathy for the endless string of victims? What about some support for their circumstances?

Sadly his heart transplant was paid for with your tax dollars. A heart was transplanted into this character who did not even qualify for a transplant - all funded out of your pocket.

20/20 hindsight. Someone believed he deserved an exception, and he got it. I'm glad we gave him a shot, and while I only pay US taxes indirectly now (taken from our N. American bonus pool, which is a substantial part of my compensation), I'm glad to have contributed.

So you believe that this case should set a precedent for all future situations - no matter how medically unqualified you are to receive an organ if "civil rights organizations" show up to protest on your behalf using fabricated non-medical grounds then you should receive the transplant. You should go right to the front of the queue in front of other medically qualified candidates who have waited for a transplant longer than you - and get the expensive transplant using public tax-payer funds. Good to know that you believe this should be the proper policy.

Knowing what the kid did after the heart transplant, the title of this thread is very accurate. Even if you agree the kid should have been given a chance, in hindsight, the heart was wasted.

Sure, the judgment is easy in hindsight. Suppose the timing had been different and it had been this guy, as a kid:

    Tracy Morgan, et. al.

The kid was a crack dealer!

Were any of these celebrities medically not qualified to receive a transplant at the time they got the organ transplant?
