  3. Epicurus! HE was "da man"...

    FWIW....

I've read 85% of Americans believe in a deity... which means, it's going to be really tough to get elected to public office if you let it be known you're not one of the 85%.

Throughout the history of man, many MANY "things" were attributed to "The Gods" like the occasional darkening of the sun, which we've since come to understand as an eclipse.... 100%(?) of those "things" were later understood to be natural phenomena as we learned about science. That is, ALL of of beliefs in "God events" and "God controls" were wrong.

I believe people grow up believing in god because they were taught to do so by their parents and society... who were taught by THEIR parents.

If you were NOT taught so when you were young, it's difficult to come to believe in a deity later in your life... of course, unless you really WANT to for your own comfort... some would call that delusion.

If you both were never taught to believe in god as a child AND had much exposure to science... it's virtually impossible to conceive the notion of a deity... again, unless you talk yourself into it.

That said, the one who came to be my favorite professor (chemistry) turned my stomach in one of the first days of class when he said something to the effect, "... what you're going to learn is so complex and mind blowing, and so wondrous... the only conclusion you can come to is that it all was preordained..."

Go figure. Well no, I never came to that conclusion... though it is all wondrous...

  6. Interesting name for your jpg, i.e. motivational-atheists...

Do the atheists need motivational tools to keep their faith?

    LOL!

I submit that most atheists have not rejected God, but rather have rejected some particular concept of God, generally the Judeo/Christian/Muslim concept of God that is found in most versions of the new and old testament...

It is a bit like a two dimensional object rejecting the concept of a three dimensional object...

One can only reject to the level and depth of their own understanding...

  9. To my knowledge, we have never discovered a tribe of people or uncovered a major civilization that clearly did NOT have deities. it is human nature. (And no animals have ever been proven to display truly religious behavior).

Declaring that one is an atheist where one disbelieves yet cannot disprove God is no better than believing in God yet cannot prove God

It is just a self-deception that one is intellectually superior to "believers", when in reality, the atheist still has no clue where everything (or he/she) came from or is going. Or why they are here, or much of anything else.
