A teen ate leftover rice and noodles. Hours later, doctors amputated his legs and fingers

  1. What a sad story to hear about. I used to cook and save a lot of rice when I tried the Macrobiotic Diet years ago. Probably lucky to be alive. :(

Also has me wondering how long ago Asians figured out it was a bad idea to store cooked rice, especially when they didn't have great refrigeration in the past.

That's the kicker. It must have been some sort of individual body reaction/allergy.

Toxins released from bacteria will have a negative impact on anyone. Yet, the degree of that negative impact is dependent upon how much of it is consumed, the size and health of the person, and other foods consumed with the meal.

For example, e.coli in meat or on vegetables can make a young adult vomit or give the person diarrhea. Yet, the same food with the same amount of e.coli can kill a child, an elderly person, a pregnant woman, or someone that has a weak immune system.

    Good idea. But note:

It's the toxins left behind by the bacteria that are the problem (in this case).

When you are ready to eat the food, heating it to kill the bacteria won't affect the toxins already left behind by them.

Happened to a kid in 2nd year of Med School. Ate week old pasta and sauce that one of his roommates had left out on the counter for a couple days and put back in the fridge.

I'm not real good with lyrics lately, but here goes...

"Listen to the turtle and Duck and Cover...
But if you are a dumbass and decide to leave food on the counter for a few days,
Remember your science and reheat your food to at least 165 degrees F to kill all the nasties that form on grains. Remember the cotton fever problem junkies face every time they shoot heroin, dumbass?
Make your parents proud that you learned something in Med school that they paid for, of all places."

  8. I don't know how many times I ate some left-over fried rice back during the drunken days. Evidently having a bloodstream saturated with alcohol providing an environment that kills everything is a benefit. LOL. Still, I am pretty sure I've eaten some leftovers since then as well, though not recently. Who knew we were living on the edge
