So true, Cutten, thank you for the great post on tactics. Incognito, thank you for opening the thread and particularly for your comments on entering on the counter after the stops have been run. Any specific ideas on how to keep the thread serious and productive? Increasenow, even though I think that there is not a "best" trading vehicle for everybody, I do agree with you that some contracts are better candidates for scalping/short term than others. Take CL for instance, it's quite common to see the spread go from 1 tick to 3-4-5 and back to 1 all throughout the day and to keep up a 1' ATR between 12-18 for a good deal of the pit session, with spikes of over 40 ticks (cents x10 USD). Do you try to take the spread or rather trade breakouts/runs? Could you elaborate on your views on CL, please? One problem I have with CL though is that I leave too much money on the table - either because when I trail my stops I get stopped out on a tick or two and then get a huge move in the original direction or because I simply hold on tight at breakeven and see several hundred dollars in open profit evaporate. In short, my Profit minus losses is about a third of my MFE minus MAE. Any ideas/pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Best trading
Based on your interest in trend-trading: 1 trade 1 contract, with expectation of $200-$1000 net after commission, I completely agree, NQ is not the right vehicle. At a very minimum, NQ must have a 10.25pt (41 tic) trading range, which must be traded with 100% accuracy to fulfill even the low end of your expectation. You have presented a perfect example of unrealisitic expectations based on trade-style and selection of instrument. Im sure the OP, while using a bastardized definition of scalping, is not referring to trend-trending. Osorico
Hey great post...actually, I am finiding out some of the very same things on the CL..I think I should have really said that the CL offers some of the greatest profits in a smaill move...BUT...I have been having some trouble with the CL lately because as you said...the spread goes wild at times...from 1 point spread to up to 6-7...this can really mess with you...all things considered...my focus on the DAX or FTSE were it is always .5 or 1 for the DAX spread and .5 to 1.5 basically for the FTSE...thanks...
yes...to be exact...those are some of the same problems I have had...I think if you make original money in a CL trade for the day...BANK it and move on to another contract or do not trade until next day...that is where I have got hurt with the CL...having wins and then go back to CL and lose cash..
I don't use single contract as it is way harder to manage fear and greed that way if you are a follower of letting the winners run. I chose NQ over other instruments because of my familiarity with the Qs, not because of it's tick value and/or commission rate. Incognito
In your guys opinion, if you can scalp successfully, can you also swing, position trade successfully as well?
