A guide to trading laptops on a budget

  1. Laptop HDD is 2.5 inch. SSDs are available mostly in that same form factor. So, yes, it is really just remove one, and plug in other. Of course, you have to transfer everything from the old HDD to the new SSD. I use the most excellent Macrium Reflect software to do this. It is free. And here is the cloning guide. Also, you do not need the same size SSD as the HDD (in this case 1TB). Determine space used in the HDD + factor in the amount of space you would need for data & programs + some buffer. I never needed more than 250GB in a local disk. But then again, I do not have games or any programs needing 100s of GB space either. I always use 250GB SSD nowadays, and they are more than sufficient. I do keep a lot of stuff in the network drive.

This one is for the power junkies. For just $200 more, you could really crank up the power.

What I particularly like is the 16GB RAM, not to mention i7-6700HQ. Also the speakers by B&O is a nice addition. Only gripe I have is the Intel graphics. I dunno why Intel is in t7 while t5 has nVidia (BTW t5 is also on sale at Costco.com).

I paid little over $900 at the checkout. Still a good value methinks. Just be sure to use your cash-back-reward credit card, if you have any.

  6. Of course. "What's in your wallet?" :) But that is a no go in Costco. So good ole Amex Platinum Cashback. BTW, Amex is going away at Costco sometime April next year. Then on it is hasta la Visa

Actually, Visa/Mastercard/Discover are accepted at Costco.com, just not at their ugly warehouses.
