Republican Who Wants West Africa Flight Ban Unaware There Are No Direct Flights To U.S.
Posted: 10/17/2014 9:49 am EDT Updated: 10/17/2014 2:59 pm EDT

"A member of Congress who wants to ban travel from countries afflicted by the Ebola outbreak appeared to be unaware of a key fact -- that there are no direct flights between the U.S. and Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone.

"In a Friday morning appearance on MSNBC, Rep. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.) argued that instituting a flight ban, regardless of what experts say, makes sense and said he plans to introduce a bill doing so once Congress reconvenes in November.

"I believe we can nip this in the bud, if you will, at least by banning those flights temporarily until such time as the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] believes the epidemic is under control and also make sure we don't issue visas to travelers from over there. We have a good border patrol, believe it or not, and they can catch these people with fake passports and fake visas as they come across the border. It just seems to me we ought to have the debate on this and flush this out and that's why I filed the bill to allow for the banning of these flights," he said.

"Since there are no direct flights between the hardest-hit nations and the United States, the Florida Republican was pressed to specifically identify which flights he wanted to impose restrictions on.

"I believe there are some flights," Ross responded.

"There are no flights. There are no direct flights that come to the United States from West Africa. That is incorrect," rebutted New York Times reporter Jeremy W. Peters."

    Lmao.

"Then we don't have any problem. Everybody's contained, correct?" Ross responded sarcastically. "They are not. They are traveling. They are traveling."

Perhaps Huffington would care to make itself aware that there are flights to JFK direct from Lagos, Nigeria, and that Nigeria has had Ebola cases? But it's much more fun to write baseless attack articles than actually bother oneself with any factual information!

Not to mention the ban that is being proposed is to prohibit passengers purchasing tickets from Ebola stricken countries for destinations in the United States. Tickets originating in African countries. Because, just in case you don't know how it works, you buy your ticket to your destination, Ricter. You don't buy it to one airport outside of the US, and then walk around that airport looking for another country to go to. Restrict the purchasing of tickets to the US - tickets purchased in countries like Liberia or otherwise.

Christ, it's like trying to explain to a child who just learned how to read.

    Oh, and "lmao".

  7. Maine Gov. LePage, Who Vetoed Medicaid Expansion, Wants To 'Find A Way' To Help Uninsured

WASHINGTON -- Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) said Tuesday that he wants to "find a way" to provide health insurance to the state's 70,000 uninsured, even though he vetoed legislation in April that would have done just that -- and at no cost to the state.

During a gubernatorial debate, LePage said he vetoed the Medicaid expansion bill because it would have covered people with incomes at 400 percent of the federal poverty level. The bill would have accepted millions of dollars in federal funds for the state's MaineCare program under the Affordable Care Act, which LePage has criticized. The federal government would have paid for the entire cost of the Medicaid expansion until 2017, at which point it would lower its coverage to 90 percent.

"I do agree, there are people under the federal poverty level," LePage said. "They need to be able to go to the exchanges. The federal exchanges will allow anyone from 100 percent on up to 400 percent to quality for large subsidies. We need to maximize that aspect of it. Take those that do not qualify and then find a way to get them insurance."

LePage's comments were confusing, though, because the exchanges are part of the Affordable Care Act. The debate moderator pointed out that health care options available to low-income residents outside of the president's health care law may have unaffordable deductibles. LePage blamed that on the Affordable Care Act.

"That's ACA. I didn't put that in," he said.

When the moderator clarified he was talking about private health care options outside of the Affordable Care Act, LePage blamed that on the Affordable Care Act, too.

"Yeah, well that's ACA. That's what I'm saying," LePage said. "The ACA has changed the entire system."

LePage's Democratic challenger, Rep. Michael Michaud, said as governor he would send a bill to the state legislature on his first day in office that would take advantage of the federal Medicaid dollars.

"I'll be submitting legislation to the legislature that will cover the 70,000 Mainers who were denied access under the Affordable Care Act, and of which 3,000 were veterans," Michaud said. "Not only because it's the morally right thing to do, but the state will save over $600 million over a 10-year time frame."

  10. Fox News Hosts Tell Young Women Not To Vote, Go Back To Tinder And Match.com

Fox News is discouraging young people from voting again, but this time the target is more specific: young women.

"The Five" co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle said Tuesday that young women should excuse themselves from voting in the upcoming midterm elections because they don't share the same "life experience" as older women and should just go back to playing around on Tinder and Match.com.

"It's the same reason why young women on juries are not a good idea," Guilfoyle said. "They don't get it!"

Earlier in the conversation, co-host Greg Gutfeld made the point that "with age comes wisdom" and the "older you get, the more conservative you get."

In other words: "Hey kids! Hold off a little. You don't have to vote just yet. Wait until you're conservative enough old enough!"

Guilfoyle agreed, suggesting that you can't cast an informed vote until you've gone through adult things, like paying the bills.

"They're [young women] like healthy and hot and running around without a care in the world," she concluded. "They can go back on Tinder or Match.com."

On a previous episode in October, co-host Harris Faulkner also said that young people should stay away from the polls if they "don't know the issues." We've already explained why it's a terrible -- and illogical -- idea to convince young people not to vote. But driving young women away from the polls? Do we even have to get into why that's potentially one of the most damaging and regressive things that could happen to society?
