The structural problem is that 75% of our "GDP" is driven by CONSUMPTION; if this was not the case, politicians would not be anywhere near as 'generous' to the 'general welfare' with taxpayer funds. This modus operandi transcends the superficial party/faction lines that all of you are referencing for the bullshit blame game which solves nothing.
Yes, I've referenced this many times in my posts. The political m.o. is to bailout their "benefactors" via generous welfare to keep consumer consumption a constant. That's also the intent of the ridiculously generous public sector pensions...i.e. no need to save a dime if you can earn your last three year average salary into perpetuity.
if you want savings and a better structure... eliminate the biggest penalty there is. Personal income tax. slowy more and more people in the society will want find work worth their time.
