I attribute this more to recent Fed policy than Obama.

  2. You are right where you are right, sorry: I meant "overweight or obese" which applies to most Americans, not only obese. Though I sense that there is a change in thinking towards a healthier diet to be observed in the US.

    • More than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese.
    • More than 1 in 3 adults are considered to be obese.
    • More than 1 in 20 adults are considered to have extreme obesity.
    • About one-third of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be overweight or obese.
    • More than 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be obese.

It's certainly getting better in some areas. Ricter turned me on to the evils of High Fructose Corn Syrup and I'm more and more convinced it's not an exercise thing, and more an ingredient thing.

  4. possible, though I always like to hedge my bets ;-)

Back to the point, I know I can be an asshole and I can be hot headed at times, but I think I was more than fair in praising the US and its citizens for their positive traits and strengths. I never had an intention to side with any American political side nor to compare America unfavorably vs other nations, but what I got out of the article was the fact that raising kids has become such financial burden that the middle class is seriously struggling with the idea of children the more we move forward. This is already apparent in Japan for some time by the way, and to lesser degrees in Europe as well. I can only repeat, if one regards education as a luxury item then the situation does not seem so dire. But if education is supposed to be one of the foundations of an efficient, laborious, and intelligent society, then it should not be allowed that private educational institutions entirely price out the lower and middle class, while public education is equivalent to paper degree that makes one unemployable above table waiting.

Which is why I posted it upstairs. Blaming whomever doesn't address possible solutions.

  6. I forgot to argue the point why it is important to mention that the issue lies with "pricing out" the middle and lower class in terms of education: I believe that many spots in classes are not given to applicants on the basis of merits anymore but because of financial considerations, which becomes even more apparent the higher up you go the quality of educational institution ladder. Here are couple terms I think, make it clear what I am talking about: Preschool/primary school/secondary school debentures, non-refundable loans, "donations"; probabilities of future kickbacks via large donations or endowments (kids of well-known and influential parents are favored in this regard for obvious reasons); parental college donations or "phone calls" by people of public status trying to influence admission committees.

All the above have nothing to do with merit of the applicant but skew the admission process and essentially who gets a spot at their university of choice and who does not. In order to raise chances to get a spot parents are almost left with no choice to participate in this bidding (or should I say rigging) game. It is a significant cost component that adds onto the cost of raising children and affording them a high quality, competitive education.

Again, no argument from me on any of this. That's two in a row.

My wife and I have a good deal of money (we're not filthy rich by any means) and are way above average and even we decided one child was all we wanted because of the expense of raising a child has been absurd.

In addition, we send our child to private school now because the Department of Education has rammed Common Core down the public school system's throat. It's certainly making children "common".
