  4. Don't know if you meant it the way it sounds - but it sounds like you're asking everyone to give you their ideas about how/if they use 3D displays but aren't willing to put up your own ideas. Dialogue implies two directions.

As far as using 3D as some kind of edge - good luck. We did a lot of work with trying to find new ways of representing realtime information (including working with VR and stereographic imaging) for a couple of trading firms a few years ago and no one found any practical (i.e., profitable) value.

Frankly, it was a cart before the horse type of thing anyway (trying to figure out what could be displayed a certain way rather than figuring out what you wanted to know and then using the best way of representing it) - but they were paying some big bucks, so if that's what they wanted to play with, so be it.

Omnitrader's little 3D thing is a trivial implementation of a much more sophisticated VR-based program of several years ago - that again, none of the traders found beneficial (color coded summary displays gave them just as much info in an easier to use form). It made for a cool demo though and was fun to build and play with, but it didn't put any extra coins in the trader's pockets.

If you look at examples like CyberTrader and OT, you can see that they're primarily trying to force a z-axis into the display for its "coolness" factor for marketing and cosmetic reasons - you can usually convey the same info in an easy to digest form without resorting to 3D.

Example - price/time/volume - you don't have to go 3D to show the combined relationship - you just use volume relative width bars.

You should always start with what information you want to know, determine the best type of analytic to find it, and then determine the simplest, clearest, and most quickly digestable presentation format to show the information - rather than starting with a particular presentation form (e.g., 3D charts) and trying to figure out what you could display that way.

    Good luck.
