COVID-19 deaths in Canada may be 2 times higher than reported, study finds

Researchers say extent of 'likely missed' deaths varies by province, major data gaps in available data

A new study suggests Canada has vastly underestimated how many people have died from COVID-19 and says the number could be two times higher than reported.

Tara Moriarty, working group lead for the study commissioned by the Royal Society of Canada, said in an interview while most accounts have put the majority of deaths in long-term care, the new data analysis suggests the toll of COVID-19 was also heavily felt outside the homes, in the community.

Many of those deaths likely occurred in lower income, racialized communities and affected essential workers, new immigrants and people living in multigenerational homes, as well as clinically frail seniors living at home, the study says.

    2..

now... double the height of your chart and compare that to Sweden's ...

Always more excuses when you've been owned by the data. Take some flimsy study then extrapolate what you want from it. For all we know the same guess could be made anywhere in the world about extra deaths. I suppose this is what we should expect from a liberal arts major who has some sort of delusions about their abilities.

Of course if the data fits your purposes you accept it as is. This is where personal biases interfere with the process. Take it to the extremes you do pretty much anything can be "proven" in your mind with the "data".

    Im not, you are correct.

Both the wife and I were exposed by someone confirmed case w/symptoms, months ago, both of us got ill about a week later, mild flu symptoms, lasted about 5-6 days. It’s literally a 75 mile round trip to get tested from where I live. Doc said to just quarantine, over the counter meds unless we were having problems then call back.

I have no doubt we were both infected and fully recovered last winter.

We’ve been careful to avoid those we know are sick, and have stayed to ourselves if we thought we were exposed, twice since then w/no symptoms.

Imo, hate to admit it, but I fall into the Tony Stark camp on this one (don't know what happened to him) . There should be a place in the discussion for natural immunity.

Being as Vaxxed can carry and transmit, the covid-pass is meaningless imo. Only way to insure a covid free environment is 100% testing regardless of vax status.

This sudden rush to vilify everyone who doesn’t snap to attention is troubling and the measures they are putting in place to mandate compliance is a slippery slope.

Millions of deaths, economic strife and unprecedented curbs on social interaction have had a marked effect on people’s mental health. Researchers worldwide are still studying the impacts, which many fear could linger long after the pandemic ends.

Since last year, Canadians have been told to stay apart to stop the spread of the virus, but the ability to be outdoors has generally provided safer alternatives for exercise, recreation and dining, among other things. Those options dwindled in the winter. As the second wave bore down, cold weather and renewed lockdowns forced people to stay at home. Even with summer on the horizon, those options are once again shrinking.

The second wave of the pandemic intensified feelings of stress and anxiety, causing alarming levels of despair and hopelessness among Canadians, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) found in December 2020. That trajectory isn’t likely to improve as the country endures the third wave, according to Michael Anhorn, the CEO of the CMHA’s Toronto branch.

“Research has shown a fairly steady decline in mental health since the beginning of the pandemic. The longer it goes on, the more our wellness suffers,” he said.

During the second wave, 40 per cent of Canadians who participated in a CMHA survey said their mental health has worsened — up from 38 per cent in the first wave. A separate report by HR company Morneau Shepell showed Canadians’ psychological health has steadily declined, hitting a negative score for a 12th consecutive month. That same report said the feeling of isolation is worse now than at any prior point in the pandemic.

  8. Well you luckily fell into the category that did not require hospitalization and most don't to be honest. But as it spreads the % that require hospitalization starts to grow and that is when we have hospitals directing resources and getting over run and problems growing for those who want the hospital for normal emergencies. It has to be managed by each state since OK has waaay less population density than NY or FL or CA.

Variants will h appen naturally but as long as we don't go back to 100% full on contacts and 0% cleaning we should be fine nationally. Locally like in FL though they are going to get hammered.

yeah... but we might have a constitutional right to refuse to take a vaccine which only works for a few months against certain variants and then may require boosters for life.

This situation is still developing... anyone who claims they know the answer to the question of can the US Govt demand everyone in the US be vaccinated against Covid is full of shit.

It is more possible it could be a state by state decision.
