It nearly was. Those whose number came up had an immediate choice of going to jail, or off to fight a war they were either gung-ho or ambivalent about, or else believed was wrong and wanted no part of. Many that were weak -- I would have been one of them had I not been saved by chance -- would go off to fight a war that every bone in their body told them was wrong. Only a few were strong enough to leave, knowing they might never be able to return.
Scat doesn't imply he went at gun point. He has mentioned it repeatedly as some kind of badge of honor that he went to Vietnam to help kill a bunch of Asians that never attacked America. I don't judge those that went because they were drafted but didn't want to go but the ones like Scat that went to help kill people that never attacked America and wear it like a badge of honor I let them know what fucking idiots they are.Personally I wouldn't have went knowing the privileged like Trump,Romney,Bush,Chaney etc didn't have to go.
#1 According to an American Bar Association survey, only 38 percent of all Americans know that the U.S. Constitution is the highest law in the land. #20 Only 26 percent of Americans can name all three branches of government. #21 One very shocking survey found that 74 percent of Americans don’t even know how many amendments are in the Bill of Rights. It doesn't matter which side of the aisle you're on, these statistics should scare everyone.
These kids were young. If there was any delusion, it was on the part of their parents. Parents that fought in or were part of WW2 and would never dream of dodging the draft. The entire country, men and women, rolled up their sleeves and gave 1000% to fight the Germans and the Japanese. It was a different time. Families that had kids take off for Canada were shamed beyond belief. They were ousted from all social circles of the day. I remember the talk. I have to think most kids would not have wanted to inflict, what at the time was the greatest of shames, on their families. We're talking working class folks, 95% of our populace. Not the Fred Trumps of the world. Those kids didn't need the threat of jail, they went because they thought they were supposed to. Again, black and white.
Those are a pretty damn far cry from what you wrote. "He has mentioned it repeatedly as some kind of badge of honor that he went to Vietnam to help kill a bunch of Asians that never attacked America."
how's that different than indoctrination/ brain washing? You think Muslims in Afghanistan aren't ostracized for being sympathetic to Americans? I'm not even sure I disagree w/aiding the South Vietnamese, it just drives me bonkers this feigned respect we must give the troops for fear of ourselves being ostracized as unpatriotic.
No,its exactly what I wrote. He said he was proud to serve in Vietnam. The US were killing Asians in Vietnam.Vietnam never attacked America.
Regardless of how you feel about the politics behind the wars, the individual men and women in uniform took an oath to defend this country, it’s constitution, we the people you and I. And to follow the orders of the President and Officers appointed over them. Military members today take that oath voluntarily. So yeah, it puts them in a class of people a little higher than those who do nothing but take from this country and give nothing back. But quit being so hard on yourself, those serving, gladly defend you too.
