Kander or someone similar is the type of candidate the Democratic party needs in 2020 if they want to take the White House.
Doubt that matters.2020 will be a complete referendum on Trump with a highly enthusiastic democrat base no matter who the democrat candidate is imo.
Well it's hard to be worse than Hillary. However a lack of proper messaging could also doom Democratic hopes in 2020. If they stick with the same old identity politics in an election against populist Trump than the Democrats will not fare well on a national basis when the EC votes are counted.
You underestimate how well his message plays in states that are not solidly Democratic on the coasts. It may be possible that Trump smashes the Democratic candidate in 2020 by even a wider margin than 2016 due to the advantage of incumbency and rabble-rousing messaging --- even if the first four years of his presidency fails to achieve most of his goals.
I think you overestimate how well his message plays. He did not win by blowout,he won by 78,000 votes against an unpopular candidate who ran an awful campaign and was aided by The FBI and Russian hackers. His approval ratings from Nov are down and will likely still be down in 2020,manufacturing jobs wont be back, coal wont be back, there will be no great health care plan that covers everybody at a lower cost, trade deficits with Mexico and China wont be reversed etc.A lot of people will not be fooled by his BS again.
