Drmarkan: If there is one team that I think can upset Brazil, it is France. I personally think this will be the most interesting match to watch in the tournament. This is the only match Brazil really has to worry about. If they win, they go all the way.

SouthAmerica: Most Brazilians think that in the final game of the 1998 world cup – the Brazilian team was told (By FIFA and Nike) that they should let France win that game.

Not a single Brazilian player looked as if he wanted to play in that game. I was shocked because I never saw a Brazilian national team play so badly as in the 1998 world cup final game.

If you bet against Brazil in the coming game against France then you are a real sucker. With only one exception: if you are a French national – I understand how the French people feels about their national team.

optionpro007: sa, the correct spelling is coach.

and brazil was cool until you came around.....

SouthAmerica: I know the correct spelling of coach – I was thinking about what I was trying to say and I did not pay attention to any spelling.

In the article below – they say that it is the first time since they changed the format of the world cup and created the 8 groups that one team of each group qualified to the 4 of finals.

The other interesting fact is that out of 17 world cups played since 1930 – the only team to win a world cup that is not among the 8 finalists in the 2006 world cup is Uruguay – all other world cup winners qualified for this next round including Brazil, England, Germany, Italy, France and Argentina.

The only way for them to have a new world cup winner is if Portugal or Ukraine wins – But I doubt that will happen.

The best world cup final anyone could hope for in 2006 it would be "Brazil X Argentina" – That would not be only the final game of the world cup - That would be like a war between 2 soccer superpowers that hate each other.

But a final between Brazil X Germany will be a very nice show for the entire world to watch.

I still hopeful that Brazil would win the 2006 world cup in Germany – but a lot of people tell me that FIFA and the major sponsors of soccer don’t want Brazil to win again because they are afraid that people would lose interest in the world cup if one country - Brazil - keeps winning every time.

If Brazil has to lose the world cup for that reason at least I hope they don’t ask Brazil to lose to Argentina.

  3. sa, thank god you clarified that.

It is an unbelievable coincidence. The US team was also told by FIFA and the UN not to make it to the first round because we would be hated even more around the world for also been number one in soccer.

The US winning the WC would have been a huge PR fiasco.

We saved ourselves, let see if Brazil does too.....lol

  6. I'm not betting against Brazil, but your post makes me think that you may be a little nervous yourself. Already prepping the conspiracy theory in case they do lose as well I see. I am just saying that I think this is the most difficult match Brazil has to face. Big difference from saying they are definitely going to lose.

    SouthAmerica: Reply to optionpro007.

Maybe you are unaware of but there was an inquiry in the Brazilian Congress after the 1998 World Cup regarding Nike’s influence in the Brazilian soccer national team.

That is not a conspiracy theory – that is a fact.

There was a lot of news coverage at the time – and you can read some of the information on the website of BBC News – UK.

You might find the BBC News reporting more acceptable since it is not a Brazilian source.

Here is what happened regarding Nike’s inquiry by the Brazilian Congress after the 1998 World Cup in France:

Brazilian striker Edmundo has angered politicians investigating the national team's sponsorship deal with sportswear giant Nike.

He was being questioned by a congressional commission on Thursday over the 1998 World Cup final when star striker Ronaldo played despite appearing dazed and sleepy.

According to the commission, Nike sponsors the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to the tune of $40m (£28.4m) a year for 10 years.

    Nike influence

Politicians wants to discover how much influence the firm has in the running of the team.

Many Brazilians see the deal as an invasion of their national sovereignty.

Nike also has personal contracts with a number of top Brazilian players, including Ronaldo.

On Tuesday, former Brazil coach Mario Zagallo denied Nike had interfered in the running of the team when he was in charge, a period which included the 1998 World Cup.

SouthAmerica: I am sure the Brazilian national team can beat the French.

By the way, for me the best game of the 1986 world cup was Brazil X France.

But this time around the Brazilian team is a much better team than the French – even without Emerson, and Kaka – they are both injured and they are not going to play against France.

In my opinion, Robinho made a mistake when he said yesterday that he is going to retire Zidane’s shirt.

Zidane is a great player and we don’t want him to have an extraordinary game to prove that he still is a great player.

There is a lot of money involved in winning the world cup – without any outside influence or interference I am sure that Brazil can win the final game – it will be Brazil’s 6th world cup win.

But you never know what Nike, FIFA or other major sponsors have in mind when they interfere with the game as Nike did in 1998 final.
