Ricter, a Canadian boomer, thought Trump would be disqualified.

I'll be voting for him. I won't get the progressive agenda I really want, nor will a leash be put on the mad dog Israel, but at least democracy itself will survive for another 4 years. Without that nothing else is possible.

Sadly even if Israel were to condemn 2M Gazans, upholding American democracy where hundreds of millions would be exposed to the alternative, is the price....never mind the catastrophe that could follow in terms of bodies.

As I have stated numerous times in the past (here, here, etc.), these 14th Amendments cases to disqualify Trump from the ballot were unlikely to succeed. The U.S. Supreme Court needed to step in so every state would not go their own direction and provide different decisions regarding allowing Trump on the ballot. The Supreme Court justices were unanimous in deciding on this particular point of not allowing each state to decide on their own -- with the minority differing on the overall scope of federal enforcement.

All the justices agreed on this point - "Although we agree that Colorado cannot enforce Section 3, we protest the majority’s effort to use this case to define the limits of federal enforcement of that provision."

Supreme Court's liberal justices fault scope of Trump 14th Amendment decision
The court issued a unanimous decision in favor of Trump but disputes remained.

  7. To save democracy? Please. The last thing the democrats want is democracy. Bidens is hugely unpopular among democrats. An overwhelming majority of democratic voters would rather see another candidate. If the DNC establishment wanted democracy they'd have an open primary allowing real candidates to run. Given the indisputable unpopularity of Biden among democrats, an actual democracy would demand an open primary process. As in 2016 when the DNC establishment fixed the primary for Hillary rather than the obvious favorite Bernie, democracy takes a back seat. You can vote for whoever you like, but please don't say you're doing it to defend democracy, not when it's so painfully obvious that democracy is being thrown out the window in order to appoint a very unpopular incumbent president. Unpopular among his own voting public.

It took the Supreme Court to save democracy from assholes like you. This whole idea that you have to be a member of The Party to run for office is horrible.

Fair points all around but do realize many democracies around the world don't even have primaries so it's just the anointed come election time.
