$1200 for iPhone 8!? I'm feeling gouged...

Apple developed the latest processor by working closely with the hardware designers. It's a lot faster and more efficient than whatever is in second place. I have an Android high end tablet circa 2015 and the lag and problems are already making it annoying... Apple has the quality and they always will, the fragmented distribution of Android OS alone is enough to doom it to second rate

2nd place is probably the One plus 5, that costs almost half the price of an Iphone 8 +

The new apple chips appear to be much faster in multi threaded performance. However, for real world everyday use, there is no real noticeable difference- both are lighting fast. In 6 months time there will be a new Android phone that competes with the Iphone 8 in performance. That's how it 's gone with every other variant- Remember the S8 was released almost 6 months ago.

I have a Mi Pad 2 ( released late 2015), it still runs perfectly. It competed neck n neck with the Ipad mini 4 in all aspects( expect it was about half the price) . Apple are notorious for pushing out software updates that cause lag in older models, so i'm not sure if your arguments stands up there.

Apple haven't really innovated this product in 3-5 yrs (in my view). I think they're making huge margins on this but I can't justify the price hike in my mind. It's quite perimant to me as my iPhone is slowly dying and I need a 'new' one. I'm most likely going to get one from last gen or pre last gen.

You didn't mention that you were only talking about the software earlier. You can build your own PC and have OSX on it (Hackintosh).

  7. Well the IP8 seriously lags OP5 and S8 in battery life so it can't be more efficient, surely. Less usable for actual day to day use maybe.

  8. "Last night, Louis posted an emotionally raw video where he discusses a threat that could take down his channel and, indeed, his entire business. Rossmann didn’t talk about what the threat is or who the threat is coming from—but he did imply it’s because some company (and its lawyers) doesn’t like what Louis does: fix things.

“What often will happen is sometimes people who don’t like the content creator or people who don’t like the content creator’s business—for whatever reason, you never know why people may not like somebody else, but they’ll file a claim,” Louis said in the video. He goes on, “They can have the content removed. And maybe that person’s business removed. And maybe that person’s source of income removed.”

For context, Louis does board-level repairs of Apple laptops. You can’t do that and you can’t teach other people how to fix boards without circuit schematics—which he shows on his channel. Most electronics companies don’t share schematics with the public. And certain companies might argue that showing schematics on video is a violation of their copyright. (Louis, by the way, was one of the most vocal supporters of a Right to Repair law in New York that would have protected independent repair techs and given them more access to repair information. Apple’s lobbyists killed the bill before it could be voted on.)

Once again, Louis didn’t say who is trying to remove his content. But Louis is a repairman. If you’ve seen his videos, you know that he loves to fix things. And he loves teaching people how to fix things. Hopefully, he can keep doing what he loves.

“All your letters, all your messages, all your comments, and all the smiles on the faces of people who are happy to realize that there are [repair] people who control-Z their carelessness—that’s what’s motivating me to move forward,” he said. “That’s what’s motivating me to fight a fight that I will probably lose… I just wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you.”

Update (7/2/2016): Since our post yesterday, Louis has released a new video with more details about the situation. He confirmed that he has been contacted by Apple’s intellectual property lawyers. But he clarified that he is not being sued by Apple. He goes on to say that there’s still a lot of unknowns, and he’ll likely find out more after the holiday weekend. Check out the explanation on his YouTube channel, and here’s the sum-up Louis gave in the video description:

I am told by my attorney that Apple & the firm like my channel, are fans of it, and are friendly.

I am as surprised by this as any of you are.

I’m still interested in the precise issue they have with the channel, as it isn’t often customary for high end Manhattan lawfirms to reach out to me to tell me that they’re fans. It is persistently clear that there is an issue they have with the content, but I don’t know what it is yet. That in and of itself is bothersome and unnerving, but whatayagannado.

We’ll keep updating this blog if anything else unfolds.

We talk a lot on this blog about why it’s getting harder to fix electronics. Not just because of how those devices are designed, but also because a lot manufacturers don’t want anyone to know how to fix them. And those companies can issue legal threats to keep repair information—like schematics and repair manuals—out of public view.

It looks like Louis Rossmann, an independent Apple repair tech, might be fending off a legal attack from one of those companies.

Louis runs a computer repair shop in New York City. He fixes things that Apple’s repair Geniuses couldn’t in their wildest dreams. And Louis hosts a YouTube channel where he teaches people how to do those repairs, too.

Android is the problem with non-apple smartphones. Not much vetting of software or developers. In fact you plunk down $25 and you are a developer. Is there any testing regarding how one app interferes with another? Yeah, all the users can find out how badly something screws things up and report back on the reviews on play.google.com, there's that... The people at Google are far too busy being superior to mess with stuff like that, or make improvements to google docs, etc.. I'm a hacker/engineer from way back, I can live with android's problems but I know a guy that missed an important business meeting when his android phone alarm simply didn't. He went back to Apple right away...
