CHICAGO (Reuters) - Troy Lee Gentry, half of the country music duo Montgomery Gentry, has been charged with killing a tame bear and then making it look as if it was a hunting trophy, authorities said on Wednesday.

A top country act since the late 1990s with such hits as "Good Clean Fun," Gentry, 39, was arraigned in federal court this week on a charge of conspiracy to falsely label an animal.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

According to an indictment unsealed this week, in October 2004 Gentry paid $4,650 to shoot the "trophy-caliber" bear named "Cubby" at the Minnesota Wildlife Connection in northern Minnesota, which advertises itself as a place where animals can be photographed in the wild.

After using a bow and arrow to kill the animal inside its pen, Gentry and the owner of the preserve tagged the bear and registered it with the state as if it had been killed in the wild. A videotape was edited to make it appear that Gentry had hunted down the bear.

Attempts to reach Gentry, who was freed on bond, were unsuccessful.

The guy shoots a tame bear named "Cubby" in it's pen and tries to make like he's Ted Nugent. What an a**hole.

  2. What it is, is, a low life piece of trash that needs to be thrown into a den of wild bears. Another adolesent minded adult desperately trying to be a man, without having a clue as to what makes a man. I almost feel sorry for the piece of shit...almost!

  3. Yeah, i feel sorry for country music singers too.

  4. Whats the problem?
They do it with cows and hogs all the time.

Is the problem with killing a supposedly tamed wild animal?
Or killing an animal while its in a confined area, like the top of a tree?

  5. The problem is the bear was called "cubby", i think.

    maxpi

    LOL

  7. Rock n Rollers/ rap artists can bang underage girls, beat their wives and children, shoot each other in their own studios with no outrage from ET members. A country guy shoots a bear and everyone loses it! LOL!

  8. Sure JZ, but you have to realise this is kind of like a rapper STAGING a shooting in their studio, or falsely claiming to have done the deed with every groupie on the planet.
    Credibility thing.

And while i would say, this isnt that far away from the canned hunts ive read about (and still cant believe) , not exactly fair chase etc,
THE BEAR WAS CALLED "CUBBY' for gawds sake.

"mommy, what happened to cubby? I went to feed him his flapjacks, and i cant find him."

  9. It was more than that...how embarrassing for Gentry...and the poor Bear! All for the fake publicity...what a fraud!

Gentry paid $4,650 to shoot the "trophy-caliber" bear named "Cubby"
