Australia to resettle refugees in US under 'one-off' deal By James Griffiths and Jennifer Deaton, CNN Updated 0440 GMT (1240 HKT) November 13, 2016 (CNN)Australia will transfer hundreds of refugees currently held in offshore detention centers to the United States in a landmark deal announced Sunday. Around 1,300 people are currently being held in offshore detention on the Pacific Island nation of Nauru, and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island. The majority of the detainees come from the Middle East and South Asia, with Iran and Afghanistan providing the bulk of the refugees. The resettlement deal has been signed between the Turnbull and Obama administrations, and it is unclear how, if at all, it might be affected by Donald Trump's coming to power. Speaking in New Zealand Sunday, Secretary of State John Kerry said that the US had "agreed to consider referrals from UNHCR on refugees now residing in Nauru and in Papua New Guinea." He did not respond to a question about whether the deal could be overturned by Trump. http://edition.cnn.com/2016/11/12/asia/australia-us-refugees-nauru-manus/ Transferring thosands of muslims to USA just before Trump takes the presidency.
Obama can make this deal alright, but Trump could call this Turnbull guy up and tell him it would not be a wise idea to follow through on it. If Obama wants to be an sob, he's playing it with the wrong guy.
This refugee thing is one reason why Old Hillary blew it in the election. Let Obama make it worse. It's not like the American people aren't watching this. They will remember during the next election and vote Republican again.
What is bothering me here is the use of levels of immigration as a political football to be increased and decreased according to the whims of political parties. The democrats have crassly tried to stack the deck with immigrants they perceive to be potential liberal voters. The republican recognize this demographic terrorism and roll immigration back when they have the opportunity. Its all wrong. The government should enact sensible immigration policy that has a process or path to citizenship if followed that keeps control of numbers of legal immigrants to reasonable and compassionate levels. The use of e-verify should be augmented to force employers to employ only legal immigrants rather than massive deportation of people which would split families and cause other chaos. No restriction of remittances should be considered under any circumstance. Drivers licenses should be issued to anyone using our roads, period. Voting rights must be restricted to those with full citizenship, full stop. Welfare must be restricted to citizens and legal immigrants. We need a bureaucratic wall, not a physical wall. Then the government should stick to its policy perpetually but adjust the numbers as world events unfold such as when a refuge crisis is occurring etc. Every one of us who isn't a native American is an immigrant or descended from immigrants. Remember that.
settle down guys i am from australia and just watched the prime minister speak this morning apparently the deal is for the US to take these 1300 refugees( we want to clean up our detention centres) but for us to increase central american refugees( i dont know the figure) the end result is we are trying to eradicate boat refugees.the government now is trying to pass a bill that states that any refugees that come by boat will get a lifetime ban entering australia.
I will remember that my descendants came here legally without resorting to a massive illegal invasion.
I can't imagine why your government would want to get off on the wrong foot with President Trump. Why should we have to take in your boat people? Why would you want to help our outgoing president in his mission to do as much damage to our country as possible on his way out the door?
