Would you trust an online backtesting tool to build strategies ?

spikeet.com is a tool we have built to pull historical data and develop trading strategies.
It's main use though, as of now - is pulling data into spreadsheets and then taking it from there, trying to find correlations and an EDGE through the data. all done with no code, and you can scan the entire market for finding patterns and your criteria.

We are thinking of building a no-code advanced strategy backtester. Curious to hear if that is smth traders will use - to find and refine successful trading strategies ?
Would you trust and share your ideas with such a tool ? feel comfortable enough to plug in trading ideas and generate strategies with it ?

  2. No. Who gives away the development of their trading strategies? Keep them on your own computer. Anything that works will be copied.

bcs its very hard to backest a strategy on ur own ?

  4. Ninja clearly points out back testing if flawed and not accurate.

  5. No, it's not. But context is important. If by hard you mean that learning to code and do math is hard then maybe you are right. I do this stuff for fun as my retirement job. It's way easier and less stressful than the serious engineering work I used to do. So it's all relative.

But I get it. People want to explore the data and play around. Speculate. Drink a beer while doing it. You provide the tools for that. I could very well be creating and selling those tools too. They have value in the proper context.

    What is "smth"? Weird terminology.

  7. The page you linked is just indicating that getting orders filled is a whole other challenge. Fills are complex and the place where I spend most of my strategy development and coding time. This isn't a flaw or an accuracy issue at all. It's just how markets work. If you want to buy/sell a stock then you have to make an agreeable deal with another party. An electronic exchange does not change that. They are just telling you that their tool isn't modeling these details.

  8. I went through this video:

I think it is a good scanner and probably the best use for the tool is to find a market that would match your trading style. In terms of back-testing, I don't think people would give away their strategies. There are many back-testing libraries that can do the job offline on GitHub, I even have built my own one. It is not hard to build a back-testing routine with the tools that developers have available, so the ones that would use an online back-tester would be the ones that can't develop their own code. I guess there is a market for that, but you are getting replies from developers, so they won't be kind.

How are you going to be different than Trade Ideas? I've been using them for 10+ years, and their back testing is amazing. It tends to overstate results, as does every back testing system, but it still lets you know if the strategy is viable. I have the ability to share results, but why would I?

BTW, back testing is just one portion of their platform. I wouldn't trade without their scanner. I use it every day using a few different windows that I set up myself. They offer some default strategy windows but I never use them.

You can also link to E-trade and IB for automated trading.

  10. I ran robots form Targets Trading Pro and Tend Hunter for 5 days in real time - paper trading (288 trades) and then ran the same past 5 days with back testing - 37% discrepancies - mostly around entries, targets and stops; 16% missed trades all together and a 23% discrepancy in final P/L. I give Ninja back test a worthless rating. Real time paper trading rules, back testing drools.

What actual side by side data do you have?
