Ticker symbols that have nothing to do with the actual names of companies. An example, - 15601628.SS And that is, - China Life Insurance Maybe something like CLI.C would be, better (?) T-800 Will turn out to be some CCP Robotics Group https://www.barrons.com/amp/articles/stock-ticker-symbols-performance-51562102318
There has to be a reason. Maybe that number symbolizes longevity in Chinese or something I dunno. Not all Chinese companies' stock ticker symbols are like that. They do ticker symbols that reflect the company itself like baba, didiy...
Maybe. Yet out of a 100 of largest ones, ~80% are like that. https://companiesmarketcap.com/china/largest-companies-in-china-by-market-cap/ Somebody don't want the public to memorize em. Given the stories when people want to buy Ford and they type in FORD instead of F, some random 10 numbers code must be another level. Netherlands Logistic Comp. SLIGRO SLIGR.AS Denmark Ferries DFDS Seaways DFDS.CO Tiny Lithuanian Bank Siauliu Bankas SAB1L.VS Meanwhile in China, 200Billion Market Cap travelling agency : 5000.454545Wakanda4E333.SS Got 1200 names in my watchlist. Not even a single one like those. Just curious. Always was. Thought, will ask, finally.
Compare numbers and Roman Alphabets, the Chinese is better at numbers in pronouncing and remembering. It's mainly their speaking and educational background.
They don’t use Roman letters and their phone number is 10 digits. A stock broker I used back in the days can remember nearly 150 companies by the numbers. Korean and Japanese use the numerical as well.
German sickos too have such a numerological system like the Chinese. As the OP also said, it's inefficient, also IMO, as the US ticker system is better. With say 36 symbols (A to Z plus 0 to 9) one can with just 4 characters have 36^4 = 1,679,616 tickers. One can eliminate some of them, like "FUCK" or "SHIT" , and still would have enough to cover all tickers of the biggest country. And append the country code to it, for example ".CN", then you get a worldwide usable system ...
Symbol re-use is an interesting twist here. For example, in the US, the symbol "AB" has been used by 6 unrelated companies over the last 60+ years (AllianceBernstein, ABA Industries, ABI American Businessphones, Alex Brown, Ambac Industries, Cannon Express)
For average investors stateside, interactive brokers is the best bet. Just turn on the Hone Kong Exchange trading permission, then check SZSE and SSE link box. You may or may not use want to pay for the real time data, I don’t. I submit limit orders and wait for the trend, don’t day trade there. Settlement I think is either T+2 or T+3.
