Why such low volume yesterday and today

Discussion in 'Index Futures' started by IronFist, Jun 13, 2008.

  1. At least on the YM? The last few days have been above 200,000 and yesterday was like 86k and today is about to close at under 50k.

Switch to the SEPT contract from the JUNE contract to see the volume. Rollover was Thursday, June 12th.

  3. oh, that makes sense. I'm new to futures and I was wondering when they switched over. How does one find out the exact date? I figured the June contract would trade until the end of June.

  5. ^ Thanks.

So are most people going to be trading YMU8 for the next few months then? Does it make a difference which one you trade? It looks like the prices between YMM8 and YMU8 were almost identical today... is it always best to rollover ASAP to get more liquidity and better fills?

Index futures expire on the 3rd Friday of the expiration month. The rollover occurs on the 2nd Thursday of expiration month. You want to switch to the front month on rollover day for best liquidity.

If you are going to be trading futures you need to research and understand the basics of the contracts you are trading.
