Why S&P 500 pre or post market data is almost relevant after market?

    Hey guys,

A newbie here. I have a question on S&P 500. I've been checking up on S&P 500 index and found that the markets news here in EST around 10 o'clock or whatever time before I go to bed, always write something like this.

"Asian stocks climb with U.S. futures as bonds steady; oil gains"
    "........ S&P 500 index contracts rose 0.2 percent ....."

The market here in the States has already closed (I know that Asian markets start to open their trading", but how do they come up with S&P 500 index while the U.S. market is still closed? I also found that they are quite right when the market open in next morning.

Can someone please explain that phenomenon to me?
