Has VIX ever hit 100? And if it did, for how long did it stay above that level? Seems risky to buy a call into something that will drop from that level very quickly. Wouldn't it be better to buy the put at 100?

Yes it's a long shot... but it's now or never Bro!!! At that price it's a bargain :D

    It’s worth 5x more than a 25 put ...
Not sure it’s a great value.

    I don’t think that 100 is 5x more likely than 25.
Sell the 100 Call and buy the 25 put

It’s not because it has never happened that it will never happens. Extreme value theory tells us that tails are getting heavier over time.

The vix wont stay up there for long, if it gets to 100 it will be the short of a lifetime.

  7. The all time high on the VIX was reached on October 24, 2008 at 89.53 although it closed the day at only 79.13.

VIX in the Oct crash 1987 (calculated) around 170 peak

  8. The fact that vix is such a liquid future likely helps keep it from going to those 1987 levels

yup.. but check out the vol of vol $VVIX.. it hit 160.59 high which I think is the second all-time high for this product.

Remember, when it comes to irreal velocity moves, implieds rise.. vol of vol is pumped and the magnitude of movement is inceased. The entire structure of the market inverts. Skew is abundant and the entire terminal distributions widen. IV is very high, this is foreshadowing a spike in ambient vol. Thus I'd be weary of anyone selling premium just because IV is inflated.

Interestingly enough I have about 12 positions consisting of ITM/OTM but mostly ATM verticals, non-diagonals, mostly put fly's in DOW stocks (the liquid ones), and this movement has barely affected my delta. I'm negative on 5 of the 12 legs but P/L Open is +$400. I put these positions on last week and was shitting my pants on Sunday afternoon (Hawaii time braddaz) when the circuits got hit..
