How many members here use ETFs & leveraged ETFs. I see a lot of misinformation floating around everywhere and I'm wondering what the common consensus is on them. Also wondering more specificlly about the downside or what members dislike about them. Thanks - hopefully people will discuss.
==================== WinS-T; a]From the trading/investing comments here, over the years, & daily volume; plenty , on SPY,QQQQ,IWM,DIA............................. b] Still researching the leveraged ETFs, haven't been trading them enough to comment much on.Should do well,Investors Business Daily gave then a special section also. c] See any more Lehmans out there related to ETF s ,etn???? Blaming short sellers[like LEH did] usually not a good sign,LOL W]Since you're in the business, any war stories ; comments on USO????? comments on your best products,[if allowed ]????.
I try to be around as a resource rather than market products that my company offers - but I'd be happy to comment here and there. I love them for trading intra-day but they can bite you badly if you hold on too long or get behind a trade and convince yourself you can hang on for the next spike/drop... I don't know of any war stories yet on any leveraged ETFs - but i'm sure there are some out there. USO... if you have questions I'd be happy to try and answer or ask someone who would know so I can get an answer back to you. I feel like I've spent more time trying to convince people that leveraged ETFs are NOT the right product for them than I have trying to comment on them being a great investment tool - for some..
Here's a link to an article by Oberman that suggests that these leveraged ETF's d0 not perform 2x the underlying instrument over time. http://www.thestreet.com/story/10457663/....ltrashorts.html Also, Look at the weekly charts of EEM and EEV. One is a 2:1 short- both both ended up losing over the 2008- present day. This may not be an issue for a day-trade, but for swing traders , you're not getting the 2:1 or 3:1 over the longer term it would appear.SD
I trade 'em all. Or at least those with volume above 100K. I luv 'em. Some move like stocks, but don't have all the bankruptcy risk on the downside, or buyout risk on the upside, problems that stock has. I long them and short them. I even short the ultrashort ones. Why? Because a setup is a setup. There can be a problem with locates tho. Give ETFs a try! ================ UGA is helpful/fun ,,the technicals can help game the proper time gas fill ups, some times. MOO is plenty liquid For an excellant, educational read on the oil business; i recommend the [120+/ page ]prospectus of USO. Not a stock tip, but their lawyer is unusually clear, thorough. Interesting they use the word ''predict'' in the prospectus, but then warn''results may differ'' Also some whine abut a 10% tracking error[USO is mostly/crude contracts, cash]; wouldnt call it a tracking error, its disclosed part of plan; & they have the discretion to trade[perhaps 10%?] in USO, nat gas, gasoline, heat oil................................................... Leveraged is the worst thing to learn to trade/invest on why leverage ignorance, the place we all start from. ========================================= Wayne , what a list, i may need to read more of that.
Very astute comment. These are purely trading vehicles. You can find yourself in a big hole in a hurry using them any other way. They are also tricky to use to hedge a portfolio. You cannot just put them on and assume you are hedged like you would with puts. You have to trade around them, kind of like gamma scalping a delta neutral options position. Personally, I have used the OIH for a long time and started trading the SKF when the prohibition on shorting financials went into effect. SKF is the crack cocaine of trading. Use with extreme care.
BGU - ("Big UP") 3x Russell 1000 large cap index . BGZ - ("Big Zero") 3x inverse of BGU ERX - 3x Russell 1000 Energy Index. ERY - Inverse of ERX I love these 4 guys. They've done very well for me in my strategy. Hint: DO NOT USE THESE FOR ANY LONG-TERM INVESTMENT. THEY ARE BEST USED FOR SHORT-TERM MARKET SURFING. ... At least that's how I've been doing well with them,
