Food for thought... Suppose human history is cyclical. Instead of continually evolving to some perfect state of existence, it is instead subject to some reactionary element hitting the reset button. Over and over again. How do you take care of yourself if and when the system breaks down? Like Lebanon in the 80's or Serbia in the 90's. Or New Orleans in 2005. The modern US relies on electrons and oil. What will you do if the power grid is destroyed or all the oil tankers are sunk?
My friends and I will go up to the mountains and live in a tight knit community that is relatively self-sufficient.
The MAJOR problem will be getting there from where you are. You'll want to hold up where you are for several weeks until at least some of the initial mania slows to steady vs raging as it most certainly will a the start. I recommend: A bare minimum of two months food for each person in your home Water for each person, plus water purification methods (straws, filters, tabs) Ammunition Medical supplies Topographical maps ALTERNATE routes to what you had planned And much more... I could go on for days. The above is bare minimum.
This is obviously dependent on what the crisis is, right? Some things would give plenty of notice, and we'd be gone by the time the event hit. Some are instant and without warning. Regardless, I've got the BOB all set. If I had to hole up in the house for a month or two, I could easily pull that off.
You mentioned transportation, but how are you going to do it? Hoard fuel and auto supplies? Steal it? Revert to horse and wagon? One source suggest learning to fly and having a fueled plane available. That only works if you have notice. And can get to the airport/field... And they let you in... Methinks you're going to need far more ammunition than you think, with all the looting and rioting likely to occur...
