I'm wondering is there a limit on numbers of contracts one can open. I have heard of position limits, but not sure if they apply when the positions are closed within a day, or a few days. Say, hypothetically a trader had enough money to open 100,000 contracts in any instrument, can it be done?
It depends on the exchange, but CME does have an aggregate position limit (daily and monthly) on each futures instrument, which varies based on said instrument. P.S. I'ma try to find the latest release on that, it's somewhere in the e-mail clusterF I have, heh.
I dont' have a recent one saved, so here's the link to their page. You need Excel or an Excel reader to view them... https://www.cmegroup.com/rulebook/files/position-limits-cme.xlsx
Seriously, just talk to your broker and ask that question. If you don't have the account size with them at the moment you ask them that question...they'll ask you why you're asking such a question. wrbtrader
I know for a fact that ES has an aggregate position limit way higher than 20,000. I do not have access to Excel on this machine, so you'll have to do some research there on your own. Can cut and paste the limits tomorrow morning when I am at my laptop, if you do not find the tru answer.
Last time I saw a P.L. memo was about a decade ago and I'm sure they are on the CME site. The one detail I remember is your P.L. went up with multiple expirations. So you used to be able to get really big as long as you didn't concentrate on one expiration.
