This is an amazing screw up on behalf of so many people, this woman basically pleaded with FBI people to do something about this guy and they did nothing, I realise they must get thousands of calls like this, but its hard to fathom that this one got through the cracks. A person close to the teenager accused of killing 17 people at a Florida high school warned the FBI she was concerned he would “get into a school and just shoot the place up,” according to a transcript of her call with a bureau tip line operator more than a month before the massacre. The transcript, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, provides chilling detail about the woman’s efforts on Jan. 5 to warn authorities about Nikolas Cruz’s propensity for violence and his troubled past. The caller’s identification was redacted from the transcript, but the tip-line operator called her “ma’am.” (Read the transcript; redactions by FBI.) “You know, it’s just so much,” she said on the call. “I know he’s—he’s going to explode.” She said she was making the call because she wanted a “clear conscience if he takes off and, and just starts shooting places up.” The FBI last week acknowledged receiving such a call, which it said was from a person close to Mr. Cruz. But the transcript and the stark nature of the caller’s precise warnings about Mr. Cruz’s disturbing actions and volatile temperament, previously hasn’t been made public. The caller began by saying Mr. Cruz had the mental capacity of a 12- or 14-year-old. She said he had started posting messages on his Instagram account that he wanted to kill himself and she’d alerted police to that threat, but wasn’t sure what happened in that investigation. More recently, Mr. Cruz “switched it to he wants to kill people,” the unidentified woman told the operator in a somewhat rambling conversation. “Something is gonna happen,” she said. “Because he’s, he doesn’t have the mental capacity. He can’t, he’s so outraged if someone talks to him about certain things.” Related Video 20 Years of School Shootings Since 1998, there have been more than a dozen shootings at kindergarten, elementary, middle and high schools that resulted in multiple deaths. These are some of the victims. The woman provided a number of specifics about Mr. Cruz, identifying him by name, saying he lived in Parkland, Fla., naming his workplace and giving the address and number of the family with whom he was staying. The caller described disturbing behavior by Mr. Cruz, including a propensity for cutting up frogs and, at least on one occasion, a bird. “He brought the bird into the house,” she recounted. “He threw it on his mother’s kitchen counter and he started cutting it up. He has all kinds of hunting knives. I don’t know what knife he used, though. And he started cutting the bird up, and his mother…said, ‘What’re you doing?’ And he says, ‘I want to see what’s inside.’” Then the caller said, “That to me would be a red flag.” She said that at some point Mr. Cruz was due to receive $25,000 a year, apparently from a life insurance policy, and she was concerned he would spend it on guns. He had already used his mother’s Social Security money, the caller said, to purchase “all these rifles and ammunition” and had “posted pictures of them on Instagram.” The allegations laid out in the call couldn’t be independently confirmed. The caller provided detailed information about several of Mr. Cruz’s social-media accounts and encouraged the FBI to examine them, carefully spelling out each username. On those accounts, she said, the FBI would likely find photographs of Mr. Cruz dressed up as a ninja and a fighter for Islamic State. “It’s alarming to see these pictures and to know what he’s capable of doing and what could happen,” the caller added. “He’s [been] thrown out of all these schools because he would pick up a chair and just throw it at somebody, a teacher or a student, because he didn’t like the way they were talking to him.” The FBI last week issued a statement disclosing that the call wasn’t passed on to its Miami field office for investigation. “Under established protocols, the information provided by the caller should have been assessed as a potential threat to life,” the FBI said. “The information then should have been forwarded to the FBI Miami field office, where appropriate investigative steps would have been taken.” The FBI and the Justice Department are investigating why the lead wasn’t followed up. It was one of a stream of mishaps in which law enforcement appears to not have followed up on warnings about Mr. Cruz. https://www.wsj.com/articles/fbi-tip-line-caller-said-nikolas-cruz-is-going-to-explode-1519415442
I've only seen a cop intervene in a active shooter situation ONCE. That deputy in Texas that ran up and killed the shooter. Bravo to that officer. But the rest. Oh man, such cowards. It kind of started with the LA riots with the cops and fire department standing off while the mob looted and burned parts of the city. God help us when the criminals realize they are not necessarily facing lethal force when they commit violent crimes.
Some will react and some wont. Everyone is a badass when they are discussing 'what if', but when there are real bullets flying its a different story. The military has the same problem.
We either give up privacy and search and seizure rights, or gun rights to prevent these attacks. I'd rather give up some gun rights
Yeah you hit the nail on the head, thats the argument, personally i have never even touched a gun so i could care less if they try to put some measures in place to curb that side, but it seems strange that you need to be so worried about even putting the wrong two words in a sentence like "Bomb" and the presidents name if your debating the war, cause these people in the NSA track just about everything on the internet, but then at the same time they cant even catch a stone cold killer when presented with facts right down to "Colonel mustard in the library with a wrench"
Truth. I'm not sure, entirely, what I would do. You can't know until you are in that situation. The cops weren't under fire so you would expect them to try to make contact rapidly so people are angry.
Because the FBI and law enforcement in general is afraid of right wing zealots, if they had raided the guy and took his guns away, the NRA and the reactionaries would have been calling it another abuse of power and how the federal gooberment is coming for the guns. You still repeat the lie about 'Obama using the IRS to go after Cons' even after it was proven to be a lie, you are part of the problem.
No Mr. exGOPer, the lie is the leftist cover-up. An internal IRS review found that of 199 (c)(4) cases, the conservative to liberal/progressive ratio was 75% to 5% which is 15 to 1. Nothing to see there, right? Also, the government recently agreed to a multimillion-dollar settlement to resolve a lawsuit that was brought on behalf of 428 conservative groups -- because the IRS targeting of conservatives "was proven to be a lie" right? https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/26/us/politics/irs-tea-party-lawsuit-settlement.html
Actually the settlement from the federal government explicitly stated it was the truth -- go read the article from the NYT or many other articles regarding the settlement.
A report released Thursday by the Treasury Department’s inspector general for tax matters indicates that the IRS also singled out nearly 150 organizations whose names suggested they were affiliated with liberal organizations. Without specifically characterizing the politics of the groups, the report said the IRS initiated reviews when applicants’ names included words such as “occupy,” “progressive” and “green energy” between 2004 and 2013. The same Treasury watchdog had said in 2013 that the IRS reviewed about 250 conservative-sounding groups, with names that included words such as “tea party” or “patriot.” That report fueled the scandal narrative: “This was a targeting of the president’s political enemies, effectively, and lies about it during the election year so that it wasn’t discovered until afterwards,” Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House oversight committee, said at the height of the controversy in 2013. https://www.washingtonpost.com/life...bdd1236be5d_story.html?utm_term=.5764f1b1f44a So 250 Cons to 150 liberal is a ratio of 15 to 1? Where did you learn math? At Taliban High?
