I rode about a mile to the neighborhood store...Bananas and apples. I live in a nice neighborhood (upper middle class) and ride by a neighborhood I would describe as middle class to get there. This is Central California... The front yards do not (can not) lie!! I saw about 20 lawns that have been let go!! Usually it is one or two (finances or the person is old or has died). I get it... The price of utilities have continued to rise in this area...Above the rate of inflation. For many, if it gets to the point of making the car payment, house payment, or pay more for your water bill, they are choosing to drop the front yard. A front yard takes effort (money) to water, mow, fertilize, repair sprinklers. Yes, I believe that some of these places will go the way of Arizona or Las Vegas...Rocks and drought resistant plants. For others (many others), it the canary in the coal mine... "We'll water the trees and shrubs...But that's it"!! PS I saw where tourism in Vegas is down about 6.5-7.5% from last years...Another canary??
