….and do you think Canadians are converting to the US$ now to avoid any unforeseen conversion disadvantages pop up when the switch is made?
Canada can ally with Europe. People seem to have forgotten that Canadian bulk products can perfectly well be transported across the Atlantic. You can, just for example, build very cheap concrete hull ships like in WWII, some are still afloat. Concrete is much better now. https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/article/the-concrete-fleet-of-wwii/#:~:text=Numerous small concrete boats were, oldest concrete ship still afloat.
That’s beside the point. The scenario that Trump has proposed is that they join the US. What do you think the exchange rate will do in reaction to this idea being pushed?
Well there is the point that Canada has viable options. Short-term, CAD likely weakens; USD strengthens. Long-term outcomes depend on the terms of integration and whether markets view them as economically beneficial or destabilizing.
Trump takes Canada, Greenland and maybe Iceland too, piss off the Pagans for no reason at all? Focus on declaring Mexico cartels as terrorists and destroy them, that creates a power vacuum Trump could fill.
What makes you remotely believe that Canadians would want to join the US?!? Trump is like Musk, he says lots of shit to see what sticks.
Canada's reliance on the US is not economical but mostly military as Canada has no military and is 100% dependent on the US for military protection in any war scenarios. Canada is really the frontier of the USA. If Canada falls, US will be in a very precarious situation. This is why US has every incentive even from an existential point of view to protect and support Canada. The only reason I can think of that made Trump propose assimilating Canada to be the 51st state of USA, much to the chagrin of majority of the Canadians I am sure, is to streamline everything, to make protecting and supporting Canada more efficiently. That's all. Trump is after all, a businessman. All he cares about is efficiency. But the problem is Trump is oversimplifying things again without taking into account the challenges. Assimilating a country is easier said than done even with a country like Canada that shares a lot of cultural similarities with the USA.
