What do I need to upgrade to avoid any lag when switching symbols within eSignal?

  1. Hello all, I currently have an Asus A17 and I am looking to upgrade with the primary intent of trying to get rid of the momentary lag/delay that happens when I click on a new symbol and need to have multiple charts updated along with it (in eSignal). I have a Ryzen 7 6800H with 16GB RAM and an RTX 3060 that runs my external 50" monitor while my laptop appears to be running off of integrated graphics.

I'm not sure what would be causing the lag? Do I need to upgrade CPU, RAM, GPU? Any ideas?

Also, another possibility is my internet, I'm currently at 40mb but could double that to 80mb, just haven't done that yet because I'm not sure if that would fix this lag issue or not and I don't need higher speeds for any other reason.

so speed of internet is ping time - check that

  3. I'm getting 35 down, 5 up, and I believe my ping (idle latency) is at 18. At least according to speedtest.net

As far as I know, there is no cure / hope for this problem unless you change the s/w.
Esignal uses TCP and not UCP network protocol.

    I tried various charting software.
When there is super heavy traffic,
You will be amazed at how great UCP-based software is.

    There are some s/w which is worse than Esignal;
It can take almost half an hour to load.

Every time you switch symbol in these "on demand" streaming services, the software needs to:
    a) "Subscribe" to the new symbol to receive streaming data for it
    b) Request a backfill of historical data

These might be done in parallel and asynchronously (i.e. one process doesn't have to wait for the other to complete), but there's nothing you can do to change that process other than perhaps limit the amount of data for (b).

Secondly, on the Internet, there's a round-trip time associated with your requests. You state you're in Chicago in your profile, so the RTT to the server should be fairly good (under 100ms).

18ms for a speedtest idle ping is quite poor though.

Could you try this site and let me know your results
    Test here: https://speed.cloudflare.com/

    Specifically:
Latency, at idle, during download and during upload
Jitter, at idle, during download and during upload
    Packet loss %

As a point of comparison, here's my 1000/400Mbps Fiber link:

Since your PC has a (wired) Ethernet port, test with that instead of using WiFi.

Also, tell us what sort of Internet connection you have (fiber, cable, wireless).

Lastly, since you have a laptop, try taking your laptop elsewhere (eg. to a friend's place) that has a different type of Internet connection, try to use wired Ethernet for your test, and also fire up eSignal there too. If you get better results there, then you've at least got a point of comparison.

(I've been deeply involved in comms since dial-up modem days, and specialized in this in my Computer Science degree and early career, designing and deploying large country-wide telecommunications networks for companies)

Esignal has a terrible habit of fixing the s/w bugs during the trading session.

If you see your charts suddenly disappear, then reappear a few minutes later,
and disappear and reappear again and again and again,
it means the s/w guy is fixing some bugs.
It has been happening over the past few hours.

  7. Lots of good info in there, thanks so much for you time..

I haven't had the chance to do a direct ethernet connection speed test yet (will do that later after the market), but this is what the test results were with just my wifi connection.

Note, I am no longer in Chicago, I am in Omaha.

Also, my IP is CenturyLink, which I believe is fiber, but I'm not 100% sure.

 Stop to smell the roses and stay away from HFT for a while.

  10. I don't HFT.
