Weird popup... W7

  1. Any of you ever see this before?

Every now and then, I get a pop-up-like screen. It's full browser screen, dark-translucent black with a white dialog box. The dialog box has only an "X" in the corner to close. No text, no graphics.

The two stay on the screen until I click the "X".

Malwarebytes and Kaspersky AV scans show nothing.

    ??

  2. You're owned! Someone's using your machine as a proxy server, possibly in a botnet.

    Time to wipe and reinstall.

Shouldn't be opening/clicking on things from "friends"... or porn sites...

  3. Nanook

    Nanook

Have you tried right-clicking on it and then View Source/Inspect Element/Properties?

  4. Haven't yet. Will next time.

    Thanks.

  5. Could be. But why would such a program announce its presence?

  6. Script kiddie, most likely. With a pro, such "mistakes" would be rare.

Are you using IE? I remember when I was testing some Javascript and/or iframe code, my mistakes would show up as a blank window with a red X, just like you experienced.

  7. Mostly I use Pale Moon... sometimes IE, but perhaps not often enough to see it appear there.

  8. Another possibility is an affiliate with a bad "onClick" or "onMouseOver" attribute in a html tag... Made that mistake a few times, too...

  9. Reminds me of some of the popups to "like us" on FB... maybe it displays weirdly on mine because I don't have a FB account. ??

  10. Look in Malwarebytes for any exceptions which you did not put in there.
