Even if I were planning to upgrade(?) to W10, I would do so as late as practical... and certainly not before SP1. Seems every week there is a new W10 "build". That tells me W10 really isn't ready yet for prime time. (Thanks to the maker of my stock market software no longer supporting my version, I may never be able to use W10. So... "plan B")
There's no upgrade deadline on Linux systems. Plus, your Windows-only app may very work using Wine under Linux.
I don't believe that popularity is a suitable metric for applicability. My current company and the 2 before that (spanning 12 years) all use Linux in their shipping products. If you want a stable, totally customizable platform then Linux is the way to go. MSFT and AAPL products are great for getting your granny set up for surfing the web.
