    VIX was around 60$.

    Why VIX MAY 20 25’ 35 CALL wasn’t worth around 25$ (60-35) + extrinsic value ?

It’s not just about this call. Same with others.

each vix future represents a different set of spx options. They represent the forward vol. Vix may represents what the 30 day implied vol will be at may expiry. Vix spot represents the 30 day implied vol today.

    Alright.

Does the VIX MAY OPTION’s expiration has VIX MAY FUTURE as underlying ? I thought the underlying would be VIX SPOT ?

Oh yeah VIX MAY FUTURE was worth around 35$ (vs 60$ spot).

VIX option’s underlyings are the futures. Not the spot (index).

    Makes sense.
    Thanks.

    yes.

all options use the corresponding forward (future) as the spot ref. In most cases that just accounts for the dividends and cost of carry. But in the case of vix the future is a completely different asset. Technically the may future could be 1 (or a hundred) while the vix spot is 60.

If VIX spot is 60 near may 25’ future expiration then the future should be worth 60 and the may 25’ option should be worth 60.

    Fingers crossed.

yes. The vix will be a lot closer to mimicking the forward starting vol.
